    Mother and half sister killed

A Lancaster County District Court jury has found 16-year-old Alisha Ochoa not guilty of killing her mother and half sister.

The jury deliberated about five hours Friday before issuing its ruling.

The North Platte teen had been charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder in the May 17 deaths of 38-year-old Lori Solie and 5-year-old Tiara Solie. Her trial began Monday.

Lincoln County public defender Bob Lindemeier, who represented Ochoa, said he was surprised by the jury's decision.

"I'm kind of overwhelmed right now," he said soon after the verdict was read.

"Her family is just ecstatic right now," Lindemeier added. "Hopefully she can get back to living a normal life."

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning says he trusts the judicial process and accepts the verdict handed down.

Bruning's office prosecuted the case. He says nothing can bring back the victims but there is some solace that Michael Grandon will pay for the crime.

Prosecutors have said Ochoa helped her boyfriend, 19-year-old Michael Grandon, kill her relatives, then fled with him in Lori Solie's black 2006 Ford Mustang. They were arrested at gunpoint after crashing the car in Wyoming.

Grandon has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aiding a first-degree murder in hopes of avoiding the death penalty. The 19-year-old also agreed to testify against Ochoa, but he was not called to the stand.

Corey O'Brien, an assistant attorney general, told jurors Monday that forensic evidences shows Ochoa participated in the killings.

"The claim that Alisha Ochoa didn't want to get involved just does not add up," he said.

Ochoa testified Thursday that her abusive boyfriend killed her mother and half sister as she stood by in a state of shock.

"I just shut down," Alisha Ochoa she said in court.

On the day of the killings, Ochoa testified, Grandon told her he was going to kill her mother, but she thought he was joking. He then ordered her to choke her half sister to death, she testified.

When she wouldn't hurt Tiara Solie, Grandon strangled the 5-year-old and stabbed her in the heart with a kitchen knife, Ochoa said.

A short time later, as Ochoa was sitting in the living room, Grandon beat her mother with a baseball bat, she testified.

The trial was moved to Lancaster County District Court after a judge in Lincoln County ruled that pretrial publicity may have tainted the jury pool there. Juror questionnaires showed many potential jurors had already decided the girl's fate.

Why is it that Michael has to spend tyeh rest of his life in jail while she gets to run free? I am very disgusted with the court system. She is just as guilty as he is!

THIS KID FACILITATED THE MURDERS,HOW CAN SHE GO FREE? WAS THIS A DEAL,MADE IN EXCHANGE FOR TESTIMONY? THAT MAYBE,BUT SHE STILL SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SOME FORM OF PENALTY FOR THIS. WHAT IS OUR COURT SYSTEM UP TO?

Please.....that girl is as guilty as the day is long. There were several times she could have ran and got help. Shut down? She seemed to wakeup long enough to lie to her grandma and smart off to the highway patrolman when they were picked up. I don't buy any of her story, and I feel she should have at least been charged with being an accomplice. She made her choices, and watching her crazy boyfriend kill her mom and half-sister was one of them!

Maybe, just maybe, the verdict is the right one - only God really knows at this point. However, it does seem odd to me that Alicia would've just 'shut down' when someone was killing her family members. I'd think that if she wasn't in on it, she'd have fought the 'boyfriend' off to try to save her mom and half-sister, even if it meant that she might've ended up injured (or worse) herself. After all, family members are supposed to protect each other....right????

Really!? Seriously!? and the jury ignored the forensics!? Well, I wonder what her excuse will be the next time she commits a horrible crime; the lead made me do it. Wake up Lancaster maybe she might move to your county.

Abused.....? Riiiight.... What she did was just as evil as the act of murder itself. (if it is true that she didn't kill them herself) How can her family even try to defend her actions, and how can they in their right mind allow her back into a loving home after what she allowed to happen? Who are the true victims in this case, a 5yr old girl and her mother who were made to suffer before they died? Or a cowardly brat who kept coming back for more abuse, (again if that actually took place.. what a crock if you ask me?) The things people pity, and the things people come up with to excuse themselves from their responsibility. Did she eat paint chips too? Oh no, I bet she used to eat Play Doh. That stuff messes you up.....

When I started hearing details of her trial, it sounded almost identical to Starkweather/Fugate. However, Caril Ann Fugate spent nearly her entire life in prison. Guess Ochoa's lawyer knew what he was doing when he got the change of venue. However, I think the change of venue should have been awarded to Clay County or Colfax County or even WASHINGTON county or somewhere where the residents are of like mind and background as North Platte; CERTAINLY NOT liberal-minded Lancaster County (Lincoln). And WHY didn't the state attorney's office call the boyfriend as a witness? They'd already given him a plea deal to do so! Starkweather testified against Fugate and many believe to this day that's what sealed HER fate. PLEASE tell me Ochoa's mother didn't have a ton of life insurance so she can walk the planet and do what she pleases with a boatload of cash!?

You people are pathetic. People on this blog OBVIOUSLY believe EVERYTHING they see and hear on TV or in the newspaper.. I would like to know how many of you judgemental people were actually in that courtroom? I am by no means saying this girl is 100 percent innocent, but she was in court for what, "1" day, plus the prosecution seems to be fine with the outcome too. Also people, there is no such thing as the tooth fairy because I'm sure you believe in that as well...

This is crazy i to have followed this trial from the begining and i was convinced of this young ladies guilt but that this is america land of the free you can commit a double homiside and get away with it while a mother of three gets 20 years because she corced in to quity plea if she was t to scared to tell them what relly happed but instead police lied to to her and told that if she told them what they wanted to here then she would not be it that much trouble the truth is while she may been wrong in her thinking she did nothing to warent twenty year in prison be cause the kid lied and a good actress. well if you dont know what iam talking about it about tina murry case

I don't think race had anything to do with the virdict. The jury believed her plan and simple. None of us were there so we don't know what happened in the court. She was convincening enough and her family believes her as well. Hopefully she will get help for any issues this has caused her and move on with life.

I could not imagine being scared enough of someone to stand by and "shut down" doing nothing to try to stop someone from brutally murdrering my 5 year old sister and my mother... What a crock... I am not buying it. Sorry... I don't care who you are, there is no excuse for just going along with it because you were scared... as someone kills a young child and your mother.... This is an unbelievably sad story. There are alot of really sick people in the world today.

Posted by: Mel Location: Bellevue on Mar 22, 2008 at 10:18 PM
M - are you nuts? this has nothing to due with the fact that she is hispanic. Why does it always come down to race? A jury can't win - they convict her and they are racist, they give her a not guilty and they are accused of being afraid they will be seen as racist. What is it that you want here?

Posted by: HMG Location: CB on Mar 22, 2008 at 10:11 PM
All of you are posting comments as if you were there & witnessed the crime taking place. To start calling the jury names is outragous - just as Mel said, ALL jurors have to be in 100% agreement of a Murder 1 conviction & obviously that didn't happen. None of us were in the courtroom & did not hear or see the evidence presented. As Mel said, why was Grandon given this deal for his testimony & then never testified? Wonder if it has anything to do w/ the fact that he was SEEN beating her up in the past & her friends testified to that? I thought she was guilty as well; until the other day when I read that the friends witnessed him abusing her & then her testimoney about being afraid of him, it all made sense to me & apparently to the jurors as well. I hope her family moves her as far away as they can get from North Platte and they get her all the help she is going to need.

What a joke this girl is. I hope her life is never remotely normal again. I put 50 bucks on it that she will be in the new in a few months for some other horrific crime and then they will say, wow if we would have put her in jail this wouldnt have happened. What a shame that her mother and sister had to suffer. Hopefully they are resting peacefully in heaven right now.

Posted by: Tomar Location: Omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 08:59 PM
This is just WONDERFUL. I guess i can go out and "take care" of a few people since I dont have to worry about conviction....

Posted by: M Location: here on Mar 22, 2008 at 06:39 PM
The jury couldn't convict a hispanic - that'd be racist. Especially in liberal Lincoln. I'm sorry it just may be true.

Posted by: Mary O. Location: Omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 02:37 PM
What a joke of a jury. A teen admits to sitting and watching as her "boyfriend" (hopefully ex-boyfriend) kills two family members, runs off with him & is not criminally convicted. At the very least, she should have been convicted of being an accomplice to murder. I'm sure it will be nice for her to get back to her "normal" life.

Posted by: Alan Location: Omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 02:09 PM
She is a good looking young lady, what do you expect but a not guilty verdict. Impression and looks are everything.

Posted by: Disgusted Location: Bellevue on Mar 22, 2008 at 01:30 PM
OMG, so she gets to walk free?? Why not at least try her as an accomplish, which she was one?? Remember that one guy who sat in a bar when his friend killed the bartender and he left with him, so now he's been in prison for most of his life, while the murderer walked free?? He didn't even participate, he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time... she did participate, she didn't stop it, and she left with him... that's just as bad as committing the actual murder!! What is wrong with our judicial system? My husband who is in the military said he doesn't even know what he is fighting for anymore, when our system is so corrupt.

Posted by: tj Location: omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Why even waste time and money anymore. We have way tooo many rights.I say you kill you get killed. No excuses. Prison are overflowing with these type of losers. A dying girl can't see her father because he is in prison for drug charges, but two people can go on a killing spree and one walks free!! Whatever

Posted by: Chris Location: LV on Mar 22, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Her lawyer was surprised by the jury's decision? That says a lot. Sounds like the jury made a pact so they could spend Easter with their families.

Posted by: JW Location: Omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 11:07 AM
We have a serious problem with the judicial system. What a farce this is.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 22, 2008 at 10:57 AM
How very sad -- she got away with murder, and someone else takes the fall. That seems to be the moral lesson these days. She will have to live with the ghosts of her crimes, as what she witnessed and did will never leave her, no matter how underdeveloped her brain may be.

Posted by: E on Mar 22, 2008 at 10:51 AM
WOW...now when the next kid goes crazy & kills their parent they can get off too...I hope she never leads a "normal" life as her family hopes. She is a murderer.

    This is America for ya!

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 22, 2008 at 10:17 AM
OMG! this loser price of trash murderer gets off? Im losing faith in the justice system and how a jury could find her not guilty. SHE KILLED THEM!

Posted by: Angela Location: Omaha on Mar 22, 2008 at 09:34 AM
None of the posters on this board were in the courtroom. None of you were jurors. We (myself included) do not no the facts and details of the case, only what is reported on the news. Obviously, there was evidence to create reasonable doubt in those jurors' minds. In the U.S. we are innocent until proven guilty, not vice versa. Let's try to remember that.

Posted by: anon Location: NE on Mar 22, 2008 at 09:07 AM
I wonder what it is and what it was like to walk in her shoes.

Posted by: Mel Location: Bellevue on Mar 22, 2008 at 09:07 AM
After reading this,I have to wonder if it really did happen the way she stated it happened-that he killed them both and tried to pin it on her. The fact that he turned state and then was never called to testify makes me wonder if he wasn't set up by the prosecuter to assure he spent life in jail. Due to his age, it is more than likely he wouldn't have gotten death anyway - so they set it up to avoid me getting off scott-free??? Not saying she deserves a non-guilty verdict but I do think there is more to this story than what we read here online. The way it works is the jury is given this option of murder - and unless they 100% agree that she actually did the killing - they are forced to give a not-guilty plee. Its my opinion that the prosecutor charged her incorrectly thereby making it impossible for the jury to convict her beyond a shadow of doubt of murder. One has to wonder what kind of a life this young woman will go on to live now.

Justice is Blind, I'm dumbfounded at this verdict. Tainted the jury, hell the whole case was tainted.

Looks like Alicia OJ have something in common.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Lincoln on Mar 22, 2008 at 12:46 AM
This is truly truly beyond pathetic. I'd like to know HOW the jurors could believe this crap and find her 'not guilty'. So basically she just walked away with a smile on her face for this. This is truly nauseating to know that justice WAS NOT served thanks to the jurors.

This is what is wrong with society and youth today. How could they find this girl not guilty?

Posted by: M Location: Omaha on Mar 21, 2008 at 09:03 PM
I've been following this case closely. Look at the message this will send. Teens...you can commit these horrific crimes and the system will left you off because an expert in the field will testify your brain just isn't developed enough to realize what you are doing. No one was found guilty of the 5-year olds death. Imagine what her family is feeli

Posted by: shanon Location: omaha on Mar 21, 2008 at 08:30 PM
I guess she got a fair trial, however her mother and half sister get half justice.None of it makes a difference now but I would find it hard to acquitte knowing the sister was murdered already and she knew this and allowing the mother to go about as if nothing was happening or has happened until she was killed . Disgusting from top to bottom!

Posted by: N/A Location: omaha on Mar 21, 2008 at 08:22 PM
You have got to be kidding!!! These jurors decided wrong, she should be punished to the highest extent for the crime she committed and never be able to see daylight again! Crazy decision.

Posted by: james Location: bellevue on Mar 21, 2008 at 07:55 PM
    so she goes free? how?

Posted by: Ryan Location: Omaha on Mar 21, 2008 at 06:50 PM
Why was she not found guilty? Is it her mental capacity that doesn't warrent a guilty verdict? Murdering your own sister and mother in a violent manner should warrent life without the possibility of parole. She chose to beat, strangle and stab them along side with her boyfriend. Justice wasn't served, obviously.
