Police said Monday the three young men in the car pulled over Sunday night that led to an officer shooting one, are documented gang members.

The officers involved in the stop of a rental car with Missouri plates are part of the gang unit. They pulled the car over after it went through a stop sign.

"I heard three gunshots," says neighborhood resident Alan Harbert. Seventeen-year-old Jovan Reed was shot by one of the officers after police said Reed pulled out a gun.

Family and friends of Reed came to the scene near 31st Avenue and Larimore on Monday. Michael Goynes says he was the driver who got pulled over. "He asked for my license, I told him I didn't have it."

Police say Goynes, Reed and the other passenger are known gang members. Omaha Police have been adding about 30 new gang members a month to their list.

The latest numbers of OPD’s crime stats indicates that from last September to December, investigators counted 90 new suspected gang members. There's also one new gang.

Since 2002, the number of Omaha gangs had been unchanged at 28, but a new one showed up in the last three months. Police won’t comment on who it is so’s not to give them any credibility.

From 2,400 suspected gang members in 2004 to more than 3,600 now, Omaha has seen an increase of more than 1,200 gang members in four years, a 50 percent increase.

Police have said in the past that part of the increase could be attributed to the gang unit doing a more thorough job of documenting gang members.
