State Sen. John Synowiecki of Omaha is introducing a bill in the Legislature that would help keep the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Nebraska Sports Tourism Advantage Act (LB1156) would appropriate up to $20 million from the cash reserve fund to the city of Omaha to renovate or rebuild Rosenblatt. The city would have to contribute $3 to receive $1 in state assistance.
Synowiecki says the bill does not mandate that Omaha must keep the Series at Rosenblatt. But he says it would encourage the city to make the fiscally responsible decision.
Synowiecki says a new downtown stadium would require millions of dollars of infrastructure, burdening both the city and state.
Mayor Fahey's spokesperson Joe Gudenrath gave this response: "The mayor appreciates Sen. Synowieki's interest in this issue, but believes we should wait for the recommendation by the Stadium Review Committee before moving forward."
We should know what the committee's plan is when it goes before the MECA board in two weeks.
