One Dead, 15 Injured In Kansas City Explosion

The mayor of Kansas City says search crews have found a body in the rubble of a Kansas City restaurant destroyed by an explosion Tuesday night.

Mayor Sly James did not say whether the person was a man or a woman. Authorities have been looking for a woman who worked at JJ's restaurant in Country Club Plaza and was reported missing after the blast. They previously said she was the only person still unaccounted for following the explosion and fire.

James said Wednesday morning that authorities can't be sure that every person who may have been at the restaurant has been accounted for. He said 15 people were injured in the blast and fire. Six are still hospitalized and nine have been released.

Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the blast. There was a gas leak followed by an explosion, which may have stemmed from an accident involving a utility contractor.

Earlier, police spokeswoman Rhonda Flores said a car crashed into a gas main near JJ's just after 6 p.m. It resulted in a four-alarm fire.
