Gun fires while being taken apart

A | A | A

An accidental shooting wounded a customer at a Sarpy County firing range late Thursday afternoon.

It happened at the Bullet Hole indoor shooting range near 109th and Harrison shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Investigators say another customer was apparently disassembling a gun, unaware that it was loaded. It fired, hitting the other man in the shoulder.

The Sarpy County attorney's office will look over the evidence and consider possible charges. The victim's name and condition have not been released.

By media reports, this type of accident happens less often than "dog shoots master" accidents. Shouldn't dogs attend gun safety classes? Maybe we should consider how much money people leave to their pets, like Leona Helmsley left $6 million for her dog. Like the dog needed any more motive...

It is doubtful that even this commentary could make him feel worse than he already does.

Oh.. forgot the other lucky part for the victim. In the next room was an Omaha EMT who had an emergency bag nearby. If you are going to get shot, you might as well do it with someone qualified to hold you together until the ambulance arrives.

Sadly there is not an IQ test for gun ownership...although incidents like these make it seem like a good idea. Common sense and basic gun safety is to make sure the weapon is clear before cleaning or disassembling.

Simple enough - pull his permit until he complete "another" gun safety class.

He had to break several TBH range rules in order to accidentally light off a round at another person. This is why I wear III-A rated body armor when I go to any shooting range.

What do you charge him with? Stupidty with a loaded weapon. Make sure he can't ever posess a weapon again.

Apparently he violated every gun safety law know to man. The Bullet Hole offers gun safety courses for idiots like this.

I am surprised this hasn't happened more often.

I'm not familiar with the law, but isn't basic gun safety something someone should be familiar with before being given a handgun? Even my limited experience with firearms in the military (and common sense) tells you to treat every gun as if it were loaded, and to never point one in the direction of another person unless you intend to use it. The magazine (if there is one) of the weapon should be removed and the feed mechanism activated at least once, preferrably twice, so that you can visually inspect the chamber to make sure it is cleared. Maybe the business and the state should make sure people understand how to use the guns before they hand out permits...

What an idiot! Number 1 rule of gun safety is....first check if the gun is loaded! Or your significant other might accidentally blow a hole in your bedroom ceiling while checking which barrel goes off when the lever is switched to the right. IDIOTS!!

They should charge this person, they were responsible enough to fire and own a gun, they need to be responsible enough to clear the weapon properly and not hurt other people.

All the county needs to do is hold people responsible for their actions when the person responsible could have prevented another accident.

I know this story posted last night. I'm shocked there is only one comment thus far. Yes it was an accident. Yes - only an idiot would be stripping a gun without making sure it was unloaded. I'm glad the guy who got hit is okay and it was his shoulder and not his chest like the initial story stated. Isolated event. Let us not talk about conceled licenses, gun control etc. I'm sure it will be here though.

Why won't people learn: RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET This is just more fuel for the "guns are bad" folks.

Its a wonder that people arent killed at that place on a daily basis. Most of the people that go to the Bullet Hole have forget every rule of gun safety. I can not think of anything more dangerous than hanging out a place where any idoit can screw around with a gun. This guy is a perfect example. How do you not know your gun is loaded??? Wow.

thats a case and point. if you dont know how to operate a weapon, dont mess with it.

isn't this place the only range in town?
