The Omaha Planning Board and City Council will consider adding 13 SIDs, four business parks, and Miracle Hills Golf Course to the city limits this month.
People living in these areas have mixed opinions. Some say, "people who live outside of Omaha, do so for a reason." While others are thrilled, “I'm now going to be able to vote in the elections that I haven't been able to vote in before and I think it is great," said Kathleen Fahey.
According to the Mayor's Office, this is the first annexation package proposed since 2012 and one of the largest in recent history.
The proposed areas are:
If approved, annexed areas will be subject to sales and use taxes in early 2015. Over the next 10 years, the Mayor's Office projects the City would collect roughly $10 million in additional sales tax.
Homeowners and businesses in the proposed areas should check their mailbox over the next few days for information. An informational Open House will be held on Wednesday, July 16th from 6-7:30 p.m. at Burke High School.
The Omaha Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the proposal July 21st. The Omaha City Council public hearing is set for August 12th with a final vote on August 19th. The anticipated effective date for the annexation is September 3rd.
