Nearly one ton of marijuana was discovered Wednesday during a traffic stop on Interstate 80, the largest drug bust ever made by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

"I was patrolling Interstate 80 near my area and observed a vehicle with an equipment violation and conducted a traffic stop," says Douglas County Sgt. Ed Van Buren.

That vehicle was a pickup with a camper on top and Utah license plates, one of which was partially covered. The truck was heading eastbound on I-80 when it was stopped at 96th Street around 1 p.m.

"While speaking with him, I detected some things that made me suspect that there may be criminal activity occurring, so I asked for consent to search and was denied," says Sgt. Van Buren.

That's where Rocky the canine came in to sniff out a multi-million dollar discovery. "Rocky indicated the odor of drugs coming from the rear of the camper."

That gave Sgt.Van Buren probable cause to search inside and what he found surprised even him. "Yeah, a little bit. I didn't expect that much."

"From the search we found 93 bundles of marijuana totaling 1,930 pounds," says Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning.

“Most of 'em were wrapped in plastic, others were wrapped like they were Christmas presents." All with an estimated street value of $3 million.

“As far as one of this size, I believe this was the largest one that the sheriff's office has ever had," says Sheriff Dunning.

“That was our first traffic stop of the day and our only traffic stop, so yeah, that was a pretty good day's work," says Sgt. Van Buren.

The driver of the pickup, 28-year-old Stanley Suojanen of Pleasant Grove, Utah, was arrested on a charge of felony possession with intent to deliver marijuana and faces up to 20 years in jail.

The case now goes to the Douglas County attorney and the U.S. attorney.

First of all, we police officers do not make laws we enforce them. So if you do not like them, talk to your politicians. As for the guy who said he was pulled over for no reason, wrong again, he had an equipment violation, and by the way, he pled guilty in federal court. Cynthia, if they legalize marijuana, I will feel just fine because, as I stated earlier, we only ENFORCE the laws, not make them. And by the way, I am not wasting your time, I have put many violent criminals away, but then again, you would'nt know that, because you do not know me or the amount of violent criminals I have put away, along with the drug smugglers that I have. On a side note. The first coke smuggler I ever caught was also wanted for murder. I guess drug smugglers are not violent

I can not wait for the day I live in a society that does not send people to prison for years over something as harmless as marijuana. You police officers should be ashamed of yourselves. We live in such a violent world, with thousands of real criminals on the loose. Why dont you live up to your job and really strive to protect and serve our communities. How are you police officers going to feel when this becomes legal? you've spent countless man hours putting these non-violent people away for a drug less harmful than alcohol, tobacco and even caffine, and eventually it will all be for nothing. Its not going away it will be legal someday, you are wasting my time and my money on pointless non violent crimes. You disgust me and I hope someday you will be forgiven for your crimes against innocent people.

leagalize marijuana, tax it, must be 21 or older to purchase it. i've never heard of a person involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident because he smoked a doobie. but lots of them (accidents) are because of booze!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow so many ignorant people. What about the fact that he was pulled over for no reason whatsoever. Don't we have rights? This country used to stand for something... and like it or not we have a constitution. THE GOVERNMENT is the drug dealers!!!! Wake up!!!! Alcohol and prescription drugs are the worst drugs ever. Go take your prozac and your sleeping pills and keep poking your big fat noses in other peoples business. Ohhhh.... do you feel safer now??? If this hardened criminal is off the streets??? You have got to be joking me... Why don't we focus on pedophiles and home burglars and the guy molesting your grandma in the old folks home and your doctor that has turned you crazy with drugs ... oh PS these drugs are totally safe.. they'll only need to remove like 9 inches from your small intestine... hey maybe you'll lose weight.. !!!! WOW WOW WOW AMERICA IN THE GUTTER FOR BEING SO JUDGMENTAL AND IGNORANT!!! I am so ashamed of so many of you loud mouths

Anonymous- who is this "we" that needs to "get rid" of anyone who uses any kind of drugs? What about coffee or chocolate? Those are drugs. What about people who watch TV? That lowers your IQ. What about people who spend time on the computer? That decreases your attention span. That would include you. Some people are more of a burden then others. Maybe we should just get rid of everyone.

Ir, another nameless report based on research which could not of happened due to the ban on marijuana research. Our under-paid brave law enforcement officers deserve better then to be pacifying paranoid citizens who still believe the scare tactic reefer-madness propaganda from the 1930s.

Wheres my other post???????? Substance war is a joke. Abuse comes in a lot of forms, and use doesn't mean abuse!! Don't enforce your laws on me,if you not going to enforce laws on other law breakers . J

the way I see it is that there are just too many loser drug users, I dont care if its pot or heroin, even alcohol for that matter, If you need to numbed to function, then we need to get rid of you, your a burden on society and a burden on yourselves and yes, alcohol is a drug

Illegal is illegal. Way to go law enforcement!

Posted by: John on Dec 14, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Bill, we are supposed to have a government of the people. We have every right to question to laws. Jennifer, as part of Richard Nixon's war on drugs marijuana research was banned. Marijauna hasn't been researched in the U.S. since. Come up with a better story. Kyle illegal does mean something to me. However when laws are based on misinformation and misplaced public fear it is the duty of responsible citizens to inform the public of the truth and have those laws changed. T, yeah you hear about people crashing their cars after they smoked marijuana all the time(sarcasm). If you are going to debate you need to list facts and name your sources. You aren't going to convince anyone with half a brain by just making things up. Who's next?

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 14, 2007 at 07:56 PM
these are the people that need to be executed, or better yet, just let him go im sure some drug dealer would get rid of him for getting his drugs confiscated

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:30 PM
The problem with Jennifers post is that marijuana research was banned during the Nixon administration. So there hasn't been any marijuana research for at least 35 years. At least not in the U.S. So where are so many of you coming up with your misinformation.

I don't see how busting this will make omaha "safer". If we want to make Omaha safer we need to deal with the violent crimes. All Marijuana makes you do is want some Cheetos and a Mountain Dew. We should spend our tax dollars stoping crimes that actually matter; instead of invading peoples privacy. As for the parents and their kids- don't be a hypocrite, you lived in the '70s.

Posted by: makeyourselffeelgood on Dec 14, 2007 at 02:17 PM
drop in the bucket...They are and always will be losing the war on drugs.

Posted by: lr on Dec 14, 2007 at 01:08 PM
actually marijuana is just as bad if not worse for your lungs. It will cause lung cancer every bit as quick as cigarettes, if not sooner. Read that in a report some time back, and it makes sense. So don't call it a "harmless" drug...it's every bit as harmful as tobacco and alcohol.

Posted by: T on Dec 14, 2007 at 09:23 AM
I can't believe all the people saying "it's only marijuana"!!! I'm sure if you catch your kids with it you might not have the same shallow idea that this is not a "real drug". Marijuana affects the body in much the same way as booze and meth. I can say for myself that I don't want some stoned jerk out behind the wheel. Just because he 'only smoked a little pot' doesn't mean the driver isn't impaired and a potential danger behind the wheel. I hope "John" & "normal man" don't have kids of their own.

Posted by: Kyle on Dec 14, 2007 at 09:01 AM
Okay, it most likely won't make that big of an impact on the war on drugs. But it's a step in the right direction. And as for people who actually support marijuana, just be quiet and read Jennifer's post. Yes, alchohol and tobacco are more dangerous, but does the word "illegal" mean anything to you?

Posted by: Karin on Dec 14, 2007 at 08:05 AM
Awesome Bust! Keep up the Good work!

Posted by: John on Dec 13, 2007 at 08:27 PM
The problem with the war on drugs is it keeps gangs who deal in drugs in business. The prohibition era is a historical example. Not only did it give rise to American gangs but more Americans drank more alcohol then before or after the prohibition era. Further more Normal Man has a good point. It's only marijuana. It's not a potentially lethal drug like alcohol, tobacco, or vioxx.

Leave the guy alone! He was just passing through on his way to Miami. Remember: Ricky Williams is back with the Dolphins again.

DB: You're not the only one getting a chuckle out of that. And after the sample, I would imagine there will be some irrational giggling, too. I wouldn't doubt that any officer who knows anything about mj would be able to spot suspicious actions - like a passenger seat covered in empty Doritos bags, twinkie wrappers, spilled french fries, half-eaten Slim Jims... As for Kyle: if you actually think this will stop drugs in the community, think again. It's called "weed" for a reason - I had to dump some roundup on a patch in a remote corner of my yard this past spring. And with all the isolated, run-down farmhouses, the midwest is the meth manufacturing capitol of the world. Well done to the HP, and especially Rocky. I hope that next time the bust is for the more dangerous narcotics out there and that it's more than just some idiot driving it from point A to point B. Gotta go clean off my license plate now...

Posted by: jennifer on Dec 13, 2007 at 03:17 PM
The short-term effects of marijuana can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate. Research findings for long-term marijuana abuse indicate some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.... figures users wouldn't realize this! I will pray for you all! Great job OPD!

Posted by: Martha on Dec 13, 2007 at 12:49 PM
Yes. I'm glad to get this drug man off our streets. We don't need them kids smoking refer cigaretts. Them lead to harder, then harder drugs, then booze, then crime. Them refer cigaretts are not wlecome in our heartalnd.

Posted by: Josh on Dec 13, 2007 at 12:23 PM
I find it insteresting how no one talks about figures when reporting a crime of this magnitude. Whole sale value, this amount would get you a little over 2.2 million. But as far as its actuall street value this is well over 4 million. Just one of those packages is 20 pounds and a pound is roughly $1,100. So therefore just one of those packages is worth 20 thousand wholesale and could bring you 30 thousand choped and sold. I guess my point is that these guys are part of a much larger operation than we can even imagine and where there is 2000 pounds of pot traveling across the state, there are another 5 campers with the same amount of pot that travels through our state every month. Furthermore, this guy is just a driver, he won't spend more a year in jail. The people he will give up will do 15 years. Either way, anyone who is reponsible for a 2 million dollar mistake will die in this business.

To just wonderering... The use of a dog in this situation is not considered an illegal search and seizure. The dog is on the outside of the vehicle and not being intrusive to the suspect at all. NO rights were violated. Remember they just need probable cause and when the dog sets down and tells the officer something is up... it presents a situaion more probable then not something is going on. Great Job DCS.

Posted by: DW on Dec 13, 2007 at 12:00 PM
DB, I doubt they said "smoke" a sample from each bundle.

Posted by: Retha on Dec 13, 2007 at 10:32 AM
That's awesome! They came from Utah and no one caught him that whole way...but our very own police did. Congrats and thanks for making this a safer place. Good work!!!!

Posted by: Dean on Dec 13, 2007 at 09:57 AM
"Just Marijuana", yeah apparently you do not have to work around other where you put their lives at risk, due lack of focus of being under the influence. By being a teacher, I see students under the influence stealing for their habit, disruptive in class, lazy, sleep, cheat and why because of this non harmful marijuana what do laws have to do with laziness?

Posted by: Ryan on Dec 13, 2007 at 08:40 AM
The state should post "Marijuana Free Zone" signs at the borders. It works for "Gun Free Zones", doesn't it? . . . Oh yeah.... right

Posted by: parent on Dec 13, 2007 at 08:26 AM
to mr normal man. drugs are drugs reguardless if it is marijuana or not, it still needs to be removed from the streets. your probably a user yourself that is why you want the laws loosened up, and if you are not a user you know you would be the first one crying about tightening the laws if you found your kids using it.

Posted by: Just Wondering on Dec 13, 2007 at 08:08 AM
The man broke the law, no doubt. And I'm glad he was caught. But...Am I the only one who was disturbed that because he refused to give consent for a search that then the dog was brought in so they could force a search? I suppose that since they had probable cause to pull him over, they could legally use the dog to "hit" on the car and then force a search. Just makes me wonder out loud.

Posted by: T on Dec 13, 2007 at 07:59 AM
"normal man"-a typically loser pot head response.

Posted by: BJ on Dec 13, 2007 at 07:42 AM
A mere drop in the bucket. This isnt going away. Its just 1 in a million got caught.Dirty unreadable license plate, illegal lane change, tail light out, speeding. These haulers are idiots some times and they deserve to get caught.

Posted by: C on Dec 13, 2007 at 07:41 AM
Now, don't get me wrong, I am tickled that they got this much junk off the streets and kudos to the deputy. However, in winter weather it is pretty easy to have a license plate partly covered. So, there must have been more to it. But my question is, how can a pickup with a camper with a partly covered license plate be profiled to pull over but a tricked out Honda Civic doing 80 not be just as obvious? I see a heck of a lot more Hondas on the road than pick-ups with campers. In fact, the last two mornings on my way to work, the same Honda has gone by me at a speed FAR beyond the limit. Am I missing something?

Great Job- but who's the skinny sergeant with all the grey hair?

Posted by: Bill on Dec 13, 2007 at 05:49 AM
What is wrong with theses people on there comments. This is yet another example of our tax dollars getting crime of the streets and these want to complain about, oh it's just marijuana? Get a clue, we are nobody to question teh laws, whether you agree with them or not. If normal man was a real man, he would have his name. Probably scared though. Have you ever noticed that people who argue the laws are the most guilty. People always trying to get away with something, that's the real problem.

Posted by: normal man on Dec 12, 2007 at 11:48 PM
its just a marijuana, not like its meth or heroine. up tight folks need to loosen up and so do the marijuana laws. marijuana laws do more harm then good.

Who was this sap working for? Where was he headed for? Check his credit card transactions. Was his trip local or did the load come from Utah? Get to work this is bigger than one individual.

Was I the only one who got a chuckle out of the Douglas County sheriff saying "We'll have to sample each of the bundles".

Alright!! Keep making huge busts like this and drugs will be out of our once peaceful community forever!!!
