Bag 'N Save, AFLAC making donations

A | A | A

The fund set up to help the injured victims and the families of all the Westroads shooting victims is receiving help from businesses near and far.

AFLAC has donated $100,000 to the victims' fund.

Bag 'N Save is inviting customers who want to help to add a dollar or more to their grocery bill. The money raised will go directly to the victims' fund.

The management at the Bag ‘N Save near 108th and Maple came up with the idea.

"A lot of the victims were customers here at Bag ‘N Save and so it was very sad and we're really sorry, so we'd like to do whatever we can to help the victims families,” says manager Rachel Christenham.

All the money raised will go to the United Way and First Westroads Bank. Donation may be made at any Bag ‘N Save store through the month of December.

The Von Maurs arranged the fund with the help of the United Way of the Midlands. Donations may be sent to 1805 Harney Street, Omaha 68102.

Donations may also be left at First Westroads Bank, either at the southeast corner of the Westroads Mall parking lot or at the branch just west of 156th and West Dodge Road.

To S: I completely agree with you...I myself used to be able to donate to all sorts of charities. Unfortunately now, I am unable to keep up with bills let alone be able to donate any kind of money...no matter how small the amount. These are the siuations where life insurance falls into place and WC. I feel that the money should go to the victims who were not covered. Very unfortunate event that no one saw coming. I am continuously praying for the victims, the families, and for our country. May God bless all of us during this Holiday Season.

to S. I think that families like Beverly Flynn's, that consists of teenagers, the money will be very helpful for college, etc. To lose such a young and loving mother is bad enough, but the income she brought in will also be sorely missed. I am happy to help all of these families as much as I can and I always remember my own late beloved mother saying "There but for the Grace of God go I."

comment to "s"...i know that you are stating the facts but this is the time for giving and the littlest angle did just that by playing his drum. just think that even .25 adds up. I gave as well yesterday at Bag n Save. and i want to thank the lady at the customer service desk in the westroads mall. her gernerosity will not be taken for granted. She knows who she is and Thank you again for the gesture. My grandson had a blast shopping with his Mother and grandmother.

I would just like to say that I am confused as to why the FUNDS for these families? All of the expenses associated with the funerals and raising kids WILL COME FROM WORK COMP. As a WC insurance Adj, I can tell you that Von Maurs WC carrier will pay for EVERYTHING, they have to, it's the law. I am sure I will be judged as UNSYMPATHETIC, but, in a time when the economy is horrible, it is hard to donate and that is why companies are required to carry WC Insurance. I would LOVE to donate, and feel horrible that I can't, but, I just want the public to realize the insurance company WILL take care of the families, they will not be left to carry the burden of the bills themselves. I would have no issues donating to the folks who were customers, they will not be covered by WC. My heart goes out to all these families, and yes, even to Robbie's family, I can not imagine how I would react if it were my child to do something so horrible and cruel, they have to live w/ themselves forever too.

Every business in the city could do something. Round up your purchases to the next dollar and let the change go to the funds. My heart and prayers go to the owners of Van Maur. This had to also be the most difficult situation as a family they have ever had to endure.

Wow AFLAC way to go. Bag N Save great idea. We are a strong community. I sure would like to see some of the other businesses donate like NFM,Qwest and some of the other big corporations. God Bless Omaha Nebraska and God comfort those in grief.

I think it is wonderful to see people pitching in to help the victims of this horrendous crime. While we can't relieve their grief, we can certainly help with the expenses. I think it's wonderful to see how so many people and business are being unselfish.

At a service I attended on Friday, the priest said that we were to look for a "light" as a sign from God that somehow that healing had started in the community. This is a pretty bright light. Thank you, AFLAC. Thanks, WOWT for the info on how to donate to the fund, as well.
