National volleyball tournament comes to Omaha

Where does a high school age girl play volleyball if she doesn't attend high school? Hundreds of girls in that situation from across the country packed an Omaha gym Thursday for the start of a tournament for homeschoolers.

The Omaha Warriors have been waiting for this all year. "When you wake up and all you're thinking is game time, so my sister and I were like, it's game day, it's game day,” says the Warriors' Rachel Schnell.

Teams have come to The Courts from 16 different states, from Texas to Wisconsin to Montana to Tennessee. In many states, homeschoolers are limited to who they can play.

"Our public schools cannot play the homeschools in our town,” says tournament director Maureen Mancuso. So this tournament is it.

"The girls look forward to this all year long, so when they get here they are just exploding with energy," says Maureen.

The competition is fierce despite what some people may think. "They tend to think homeschool, nerdy, studious kids, and you get here these kids are fired up, they're athletes, they've just got that camaraderie,” says Cougar coach Stephanie VanNess.

"I've played against some homeschoolers who have gone D-1," says Rachel. "We didn't see any better talent in the public schools than we did here last year," says Stephanie.

This tournament has been going on for eight years and is now 400 players strong with a loyal following of parents and spectators.

It's gotten so big, volunteers say it's almost too big for them to handle. “Overwhelming, since we rely on volunteer effort throughout this entire tournament and the months preceding, it's two months of solid, solid work," says Maureen.

They expect even more teams in the future. "We are going to have to do some rearranging next year because I anticipate next year it will be 46-to-50 teams," says Maureen.

The tournament continues on through the weekend. For more information on the National Homeschool Volleyball Tournament, click here.

Great job girls! I've been a home educator for 23 years. My children have been on swim teams, in plays from kindergarten to college. My youngest daughter plays the piano, sings, dances, and has has written articles for her college paper. She began taking college courses at 15yo, has a major in philosophy, and minors in dance and theater, and is now in grad school teaching English to freshman and sophomore at MTSU. My son decided to go to public school for his senior year, which was his choice. The golf coach wanted him on the team. He is also on the academic team and in the art club. Last fall he was part of a homeschool Robotics team through St. Louis Univ. The team won two trophies and two plaques, and went to the regional competition @ Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Wichita Warriors, a homeschool team of 60 children, won 1st place. Our small group of 16 children cheered our lungs out for the Wichita Warriors. Our group cheered for all 30 teams. In GA we had 102 families in our group.

If being "doomed" means my children are not being exposed to such things as the public middle school I read about recently that is considering making birth control available because of the rash of 11 and 12 year olds getting pregnant than I'd rather my boy be "doomed"!

My niece is playing in the tournament. I could not be more proud of her and the young lady she has become. My brother and his wife are awesome parents. These kids are the future leaders of our country, with them I see a bright future for America. Go EVAC eagles.

I think this is a great story. And to "It does not equate" I hope your comment was sarcastic. I think that homeschooled children can and will have bright futures. One homeschooled athelete that comes to mind is Tim Tebow (Florida Quarterback).

I love being homesschooled. Homeschooled teams fantastic. You should realy go and watch them play, they are just as good as public schooled students.

Thank you for this great story! These girls - and other homeschoolers - are the leaders of the future. They get exceptional educations and their social skills can't be beat. We are excited that our team is, once again, the only Ohio team and it's exciting to watch what they are doing from home. It's good to know that the news is FINALLY catching on to a great thing.

We will see how "doomed" their futures are when these kids are signing your kids' paychecks. While my kids attend school, I understand these parents keeping their education at home, away from the shootings, gangs, bullying, violence, ect. Dont judge these kids, I bet we see great things from them in their "doomed" future.

i've known an adult or 2 who have been homeschooled as kids and they have had little or no people skills to speak of. interaction with others especially difficult people may be tougher for these kids. good luck to them!

Great article on the homeschool Volleyball tournament. Our team is at this tournament(Denver Eagles). Is there a way that you could send me this video clip so I can show it to the team? Thanks Stan

I am apart of the Wichita Defenders team. Unfortunately I was unable to attend Nationals this year. It is great that they got the news on this huge event. Homeschooling is great and the athletes that are home schooled are really no different then any public schooled kids. Thanks for having this on the news!

Their futures are doomed.

Thank you so much for running this story. Good to see a positive story about Home Schooling on the news.

Thanks for the story. It was nice to see an honest and straight look at some of the exciting things that are happening in the area of homeshooling.

Nerdy, studious kids - you say it like it's a bad thing. The kids who spent all their time dressing like Paris Hilton and laughing at the "nerdy and studious" ones are laughing at their future bosses.
