Christopher Reeve Dies

The star of the "Superman" movies who became even more well-known as an advocate for spinal cord research has died. Christopher Reeve was 52.

His publicist says Reeve went into cardiac arrest at his New York home. He was being treated for a pressure wound, a common problem for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in complications.

Reeve broke his neck in 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Virginia.

Enduring months of therapy, Reeve emerged to lobby Congress for better insurance protection against catastrophic injury. He returned to directing, and even acting.

Reeve also worked hard to overcome his paralysis. In 2000, he was able to move his index finger. He also regained some sensation in other parts of his body.
