Many at Memorial Stadium left before halftime

A | A | A

The majority of e-mails and Web comments on wowt.com are calling for change on the Husker sidelines. Coach Bill Callahan says he's not going to worry about being on the hot seat or alter the way he coaches, but most fans seem to think something must be done.

Nebraska's Homecoming game began with hype, but well before halftime, heartbreak set in and fans began walking out with the score 38-0.

The Huskers’ record is now 4-3, disappointing to say the least, but what's the problem? Is it poor coaching, lack of talent or just bad luck?

At DJ’s Dugout, where Husker fans came to watch Sunday NFL games, it didn't take long to get an answer to our question.

Fan Andy Kock gave his opinion, saying the players are part of the problem.

"They look bored, they're not firing each other up, they're not even going up to each other and hitting each other, anything like that. I don't see any energy in it, nothing."

While that may be part of the missing link to a winning streak, other fans like Lee King say the biggest problem is the coaching.

"I think it's the coaching, the scheme, you have to have proper schemes, you have to have the proper coaching and everything else. I don't blame the players."

While there's enough blame to go around, there's no chance, in Andy's eyes, of a Husker comeback this season.

"We've already played our easy games, we're at three losses now and all we have is tough games left and away games, Texas, Kansas, we're gonna lose every game."

And if that happens, attendance at games might not be the only thing the Huskers have to worry about. "I think you're gonna see a decrease in donations to Big Red and that's bad for the program, it's bad for the university."

Let's go back to the year 1958. Johnny Rosenblatt was mayor of Omaha. The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. preached at Salem Baptist Church and Nebraska got beat at home by Missouri 31-0.

A rout matched 49-years later Saturday in Lincoln. ”It's pretty sad, never seen a Nebraska team play quite like that, never," said one fan outside the stadium.

Down 38-0 at halftime, many ticketholders left. They couldn't bear to watch another play. "A lot of disappointment in the defense this year," said another fan. "Offense isn't doing anything either."

The student section emptied in the third quarter. Optimism, while withering, could still be found. "Hope they can get better, but it don't look like it," said another fan.

Others felt more comfortable biting their tongue. "I don't want to say."

One didn't have to be at Memorial Stadium for perspective. Disgust enveloped area sports bars.

“I’ve always been one of those guys who says give 'em time, but it keeps getting worse and worse,” observed Marcos Munoz.

"If you're going to pay $52 to watch them play, you should stay to the end of the game,” said Jennifer Minchew. “It's horrible." Is what you're seeing worth $52? "No, it's not worth $52. Maybe $5."

"They're calling for the coach, they want to get rid of the coaches,” said Michael Broussard.

Much of the frustration was aimed specifically at defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove.

"I think Cosgrove has got to resign,” said John Schneider. “He's lost his players and the fans. It's pretty upsetting to get blown out two weeks in a row."

Even after witnessing one of Nebraska's worst home losses, several fans followed tradition and applauded the players after the game. “We'll get them next week,” shouted one fan. “It's not their fault."

Radio announcers on the Husker Sports Network apologized to listeners near the end of the first half, calling the entire day an embarrassment.

"When practice comes out Monday or Tuesday, nobody should have a black shirt," said color commentator Adrian Fiala, who played linebacker for Nebraska from 1967 to 1969.

Comments wrtitten below is why i am proud to say "I could give a crap" about Nebraska football, you are all a bunch of armchair quarterbacks, as long as we are winning your all so proud, if we are losing then "damnit! we need to fire some people!" and the sad thing is, is, that alot of you are probably the same people who in his 1st 5 years wanted Osborne fired, because he "could never measure up to Devaney" LOL now he is your God. how ironic, get a life people none of you could ever even think about playing as good as these kids, and even fewer could coach or run an athletic department of this measure

1 down, many more to go.

The worst part was listening to the radio announcers. It was discusting the way they were putting the Nebraska players down. They kept saying how embarrassed they were, well we must remember these are just 20 something boys that are playing as the coaches tell them to. I have been a fam for over 60 years, and I am embassased by the radio announcers comments. I will not listen to them again.

Pederson ought to have to pay for Callhan's contract extension!!!

Posted by: Amanda Hugenciss on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:25 PM
Since when do our tax dollars pay their salarys? I know the university is public but that doesnt mean it's financed by the public's taxes does it? But yes, the student's tuition dollars can be spent much more responsibly.

Posted by: Jenna on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:11 PM
We are not fair weathered fans, but think it is absolutely ridiculous to sit back and watch what Pederson is doing to this program. Something has got to be done to help these kids out, because if we don't have the right people to coach the game, what is going to happen to the program? The Huskers look absolutely lost out on that field, something I have never seen in my life. We have got to do something to get this program turned in the right direction, and just sitting back and waiting to see what happens is not the answer!

Nebraska will soon be on everyone's homecoming list.

Posted by: Jim on Oct 15, 2007 at 01:10 PM
Make Harvey Perlman cough up the money to buy out Callahan's and Pederson's ridiculous contract extensions. The state is prosecuting the former head of the Nebraska State Historical Society for allegedly stealing less than $100,000. What do you call Perlman's allowing contract extensions worth millions and millions for Pederson and Callahan -- fiscal irresponsibility? white collar crime? highway robbery? Pederson and Callahan need to go and Perlman should be investigated!!!

Having grown up in central Nebraska and lived here all my life, Nebraska Football was something I could be proud of no matter what. During the Callahan era, I have not attended a single game. I've turned off televised games. I considered myself to be a fan of Nebraska Football, and a loyal one at that. My loyalty is waining, my patience is gone. The pathetic speeches after loses make me cringe. Even though I'm not a big-time donor, I'm pretty sure there a many more like me that will not donate/spend anything until changes have been made. We need a staff that knows what being a Nebraskan is about and convey that to the players. We have talent, but without heart and passion, talent doesn't get you too far. The lack of heart & passion comes from the staff. Get rid of them, and I may experience game day Saturdays at 11th & Vine again. Steve Pederson/Bill Callahan: thank you so much for putting the game of football back in perspective, that is one thing accomplished.

Posted by: Tim on Oct 15, 2007 at 12:33 PM
I think there can be a way to show dissatisfaction with the management of the program while still supporting the program itself. People should still wear red as usual, but wear it either backwards or inside out to show that we don't like the way Callahan, Cosgrove and Stevie Petey are running things.

Posted by: llr on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:59 AM
THANK you, d, I have been saying that the players don't care louder and louder each week. If THEY don't care, why should we the fans care? They'll be 4-8 this year and life will have to go on.

Posted by: CJ on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:57 AM
The big problem here is....Callahan. I heard he is suppose to get a big raise soon. For what? Wonder if he's being paid to bring Nebraska down!

Posted by: Grant on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:33 AM
I am tired of all these non-Husker fans saying how big of whiners we Husker fans are. We have invested time, money, heart and soul into this team. UNL has the facilities, booster support, fan support, and 2005 was an incredible recruiting class. The coaching staff has not utilized any of these resource. In any other job where you were given everything handed to you on a platter and did nothing with it you would be fired on the spot. As for the players on the team I know they are students before being atheletes, but for most of them they are only going to student athletes because our tax dollars and donations are paying for it. I mostly feel sorry for them though. Many of them were promised a chance at a career in the NFL, seems to me the only one on team who has a shot now is the kicker. I am still a husker fan but I see no reason why our team shouldn't compete in the top 25 every year.

Posted by: Cherck it out on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:30 AM
Check the facts - Solich wasn't fired "just because NU had aother bad year" - there were many other personal and legal reasons he was let go.

Posted by: Jake on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:09 AM
Im tired of people like Amy/Gretna saying we are not fans if we speak out against this disaster! If we DIDNT care, we would be silent. I will ALWAYS support the team and cheer them on, never ever "boo" the players. However, Callahan & Cosgrove have destroyed this program. Solich went 9-3 and was fired Amy...thats wrong. These guys have done worse for years and WE WILL NOT LET THIS PROGRAM SLIDE INTO MEDIOCRITY!!

Posted by: Bob on Oct 15, 2007 at 10:54 AM
I still wear red, am a true fan, but I see the writing on the wall: FIRE PEDERSON FIRE CALLAHAN Hire Tom Osborne as AD. He has already said he would accept the job.

Posted by: Susan on Oct 15, 2007 at 10:14 AM
Kevin Cosgrove says the defense is "in a slump." Hmmm. They need to clean house, starting with Steve Pedersen. If he goes, Callahan and company will go. Even though I grew up in the 50's when Nebraska was lucky to win a game, this is hard to take. It's very bad when the announcers have to apologize and people start leaving before halftime. I will continue to listen to the games and support the players because I feel bad for them. I realize talent is important, but good coaches should be able to motivate a player with minimal talent.

Posted by: S on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:39 AM
Let ticket sales fall - at least from the fair weather fans. That will make it possible for some of the rest of us to attend. If anyone wants to sell off their 50 yeard line season tickets, I'll be happy to pick em up.

Posted by: JOYCE on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:33 AM
Both the offensive and defensive systems are so complicated that the playerss can't remember what to do especially when situations are thrown at them like the missouri spead offense. That's why the players are so "down". The players are overwhelmed.

Posted by: Amy on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:07 AM
Some of you can say all you want, it just shows that your not a true fan. I love them and still support them no matter how their season goes...I still wear my Huskers coat everyday...with pride! Things will get better...Through thick and thin, good times and bad, I bleed Husker Red! Keep your chin up and try your hardest...you'd be suprised where you can get.

Posted by: Bob on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:04 AM
There is still good that can come out of this season. At this point, changes will and have to be made at the end of the season. If this doesn't happen, the University will suffer badly. So for now through the rest of the season, it would be nice if everybody could put all the annomosity aside and get behind the team and its players. The defense obviously has many confidence issues, with the fan support it could go a long ways to getting them to play back at a higher level. Save the negativity for January if Kevin Cosgrove still has a job at this University.

Posted by: Jake on Oct 15, 2007 at 08:50 AM
Solich and CO was NEVER this bad...I still dont understand how could he get fired with a team that went 9-3??? This goes all the way to the top! Since he supported this fiasco, Harvey Pearlman should leave the university NOW!

Posted by: Jean on Oct 15, 2007 at 08:46 AM
My taxes (and yours) pay the bonehead AD and the incompetent coaches. CLEAN HOUSE and act responsibly with my tax dollars! Maybe Dr. Tom is ready to be AD, as he should have been from the git-go! Look at Callahan's record with other teams. He has done well with the group assembled by others and then run their programs into the ground, just as he has done with ours.

Posted by: Rob on Oct 15, 2007 at 08:45 AM
Whether you face it or not, Callahan, YOU ARE ON THE HOT SEAT!! Has anyone been watching LSU lately? That's Bo Pelini on their defensive line making things happen for LSU! That could have been Nebraska!! Nebraska has become the laughing stock of the Big 12, in fact, of the whole NCAA football program. Get rid of Pedersen, Callahan and Cosgrove!!!

Posted by: d on Oct 15, 2007 at 08:42 AM
I have reserved comments for many days now. I felt that the team would rally around each other. And I also feel that it isn't my job to criticize when I have never worked in the UNL football office. But I was at that game Saturday and it felt like only a couple players showed up to play. You can blame coaches all you want, but those players are still athletes that suit up in the red and white. They still play for a school who for most of them is paying for their secondary education. There is a lack of passion, desire and dedication on that team. I still clapped them off the field and cheered for them for anything positive. I just wonder why the comments from coaches and players sound like there is a split in the team. There is no team unity. Where is the passion from the blackshirts?! I think we have to face facts, there is no team this year.

Posted by: Shawn on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:41 AM
I don't expect Nebraska to win every game, but I do expect them to be able to play with anyone. We did not deserve to be on the same field as Missouri, USC, or OK.St. And the worst part is that it's only going to get worse. I really don't believe we can win another game. It's not the players, it;s the coaching. No team can have that many bad players.

Posted by: A TRUE Husker Fan on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:28 AM
Everyone seems to be complaining about the team, saying that we should no longer go to the games, to boycott them. So what I am getting from this is that we should only be fan if they are winning! I am a fan and always will be. TRUE fans will be there win or lose. I think that there are a lot of us out there, we will continue to support the team no matter what!!! GO HUSKERS!!!!!!

Posted by: Jo on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:17 AM
whine whine whine. what a bunch of fair weather fans. you are not true fans. you only support your team when they win. Go Big Red? Go away big red. sick of hearing your whines

Tom Osborne for Athletic Director! Dr. Tom wanted the job when Bob Devaney retired, however Bill Byrne was hired & let the football facilities slip before skipping out of town for Texas A&M & then having the reigns turned over to Steve Pederson. Nearly every NU fan in the state would love to see Tom Osborne return as coach or as A.D.

Posted by: Jen on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:48 AM
It's all about pride and tradition for us. Petey and Co. have managed to destroy it.

Posted by: John on Oct 14, 2007 at 10:38 PM
One theme that seems to be reocurring is that these players are only college football players. Thats right, but they are not playing against pro football teams from the NFL but other college football players. We should be able to expect them to be able to play at the level that they are playing against.

Posted by: Ed on Oct 14, 2007 at 10:04 PM
I will take a great line, with great running backs, and a smart good QB, to run the offense, with a great defense. Those were the days. Wesy coast offense, you can have it. Remember, when the offensive line blew those defensive lines off the ball?

Posted by: ill feeling on Oct 14, 2007 at 10:01 PM
After firing Solich, Pederson's quote was 'We will NOT embrace mediocrity.' Well, you were looking a little down and in need of a hug, too bad mediocrity walked by laughing her head off!!!!! The first three seasons were mediocre at best... this is well below. I won't blame the players, but I gotta tell you, I haven't seen any fire or heart in the defensive play since Bo Pellini was in charge. Speaking of Bo, he might not have been quite mature enough for a head coach back then, but look what his defense is doing now... I still say it shoulda been Bo. Finally, the new battle cry for Husker Nation, nice and simple... T.O.A.D. Tom Osborne for Athletic Director!!!! I have been a long time Raider fan, but at no time did I get a warm fuzzy about seeing Callahan get the job. Come on boys, fire up and fire off the line! Let's see some pancake blocks! Defense... Just HIT someone!!!!!!!!!

At the next home game, the fans should have "green day". If you are not happy with the A.D.and staff of the Husker football program, wear green instead of red. (No reason for green, just a color that most people would have..) Show Peterson in his sky box how you really feel, without uttering a single boo. That way you are making a statement by attending the game wearing green and cheering for the players, rather than refusing to come back until a major change is made in the leadership of NU football. It will be a major step backwards if the stadium is not full of people, and I hear more and more of the fans saying that they do not want to come back because it looks like they are supporting what's happening from Peterson on down. Keep the stadium full! Let's take the program back from those who obviously don't get the tradition of hard work and dedication required to coach and lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Posted by: Brandon K on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:54 PM
You people are horrible! The kids lost a football game, not the war in Iraq! I'm still going to wear my red and support these STUDENT-athletes even if they never have a winning season again. Why? because I'm a true fan.

Posted by: Brian on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:49 PM
I have never been a fan of Nebraska Football, where I'm from in Iowa, even if your team does have a bad season, or a couple bad games, you just don't leave. Like what other fans are saying these are just "kids" 18-22 yrs old. All programs big or small go thru their great and rebuilding years, oh and another thing "HUSKER FANS", DON'T BOO YOUR OWN TEAM, if anyone is going boo them let the other teams fans do it. College is just a stepping stone in life to get to where you want to be, college football is fun and exciting but just because the players of today's Huskers team isn't as good as team from the '95 team, don't just leave them hanging out to dry after they don't perform to those kind of standards, everyone is DIFFERENT.

Posted by: sean on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:36 PM
I'm not kidding when I say I've seen more aggressiveness and emotion at a high school game. Solich was not and is not the answer so let's quit beating that dead horse. Left to Frank, he'd still be running the option to the short side of the field. Cosgrove, please, do the honorable thing and just resign. Changes needed to be made, I do not fault Pedersen as most do. Callahan, seemingly a great recruiter, hand over the offense and play calling to someone who is effective. And for the luv of god please quit giving the same worn out canned responses as to what is going wrong.

Posted by: S on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:26 PM
I agree, this isn't the NFL for pete's sake! These 18 ,19 ,20 some year old kids. Give them a break. Granted I have seen more team spirit in the past which you can tell this team does lack but I honestly believe the coaches are to blame. If these players are not happy the moral is going to go to the toilet and to me that's what it looks like is happening. No one likes to loose but to boo at these kids like the "fans" did a couple of weeks ago is pathetic. The coaches need to take most of the blame here they're the ones getting paid the BIG BUCKS anyway!!! Peterson you also GOTTA GO!!

Posted by: Randy on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:24 PM
Most of the comments I've read have called for Pederson resignation, yet I see no mention of that in the article. Pederson is the one who is responsible for dismantling a proud Husker football tradition. He's the one responsible for signing Callahan to a 5 year 8 million dollar contract just a few weeks ago. Regardless of what he might say, it's obvious he thought signing Callahan to a long term contract would somehow solidify his position. Priority number one should be to fire Pederson. Is WOWT afraid to step on Pederson's toes? I don't fault Callahan\Cosgrove as much as Pederson. They are both coaching up to the fullest potential of their limited abilities. Motivating their players is something they simply are not capable of. The new AD needs to take that into account when hiring Callahan's replacement.

Posted by: Will on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:09 PM
Let's put this into perspective. Imagine if you were the parent of one of the STUDENT athletes. Would you be so critical of their performance then? I realize that the success of college football programs is often the reason some benafactors donate funds. But whatever happened to "good sportsmanship" and supporting your team through thick and thin? What about supporting these STUDENTS who just happen to play at Nebraska? If you Husker fans were TRUE fans, you would not abandon ship and be so critical. I think it's pathetic how childish the Nebraska fans are when their program is not doing well. I find it even more amazing that the sportscasters on the Husker network apologized for the embarassment. As I watch my 5-year-old son play youth soccer on Sundays, and cheer him on regardless of talent, I just pray that I never sink to the embarassment that the Husker fans and media are displaying. Support YOUR TEAM and students Nebraska.

Jess I'm no fair weather fan, I quit supporting NU when they let the highly corrupt Pederson take over and fire F. Solich. How can I support a team when I literally despise the Athletic Dir. and the entire football coaching staff? The day Pederson came in what was "The Huskers" was replaced by something that is a mockery of everything "The Huskers" used to be.

Posted by: Aimee on Oct 14, 2007 at 08:15 PM
I hate football but grew up in Nebraska. I only see the Cornhuskers heading dowhill from here. When decisions are based on who is a friend of whom...then the person making those decisions needs fired. Pederson needs out but guess who's contracts just got extended? Surprise Surprise. I don't see how we will recruit GREAT football players when we don't play great at all. They'll go to a college that is winning games!

Posted by: Patrick Lawler on Oct 14, 2007 at 08:10 PM
The current AD (Pederson) should not be picking our next head coach. The house cleaning should start at the top. Open up the check book boosters! His arrogance has yielded exactly what he deserves.

Posted by: jess on Oct 14, 2007 at 07:44 PM
I think all you so called "husker fans" need to start being REAL fans! You should support your team through the good & the bad. You all are a bunch of "fair weather" fans and it's pathetic! It seems as though you all have forgotten...college football is not their career...or their "job" as someone said. They are college students who are their for an education & yes to play football..and furthermore how many of you fans have ever even played football! I think they deserve some respect from their so called "fans!"

I rented the game this weekend on pay per view. I am asking for Bill to pay for the charge, that was just awful.

Posted by: dee on Oct 14, 2007 at 05:47 PM
As much as "we" are paying Pedersen, Callahan and company, their job performance is so far below what anyone should expect that I expect Bill and Steve to provide Nebraskans a refund. I feel very bad for the players - they are not being coached. It is not the young men's fault that they are not provided the tools to create a winning season. FIRE PEDERSEN and his friends before he screws-up our current successful programs.

Posted by: Mike on Oct 14, 2007 at 05:43 PM
The student-athletes are simply running what the coaches install. The coaches are paid very well to recruit, teach and win. The problem is painfully obvious: Pederson, Callahan and Cosgrove have no clue how to win at this level of the college game. These clowns couldn't manage their way from one side of a room to the other, much less a footbal program of this stature. The solution is very simple, don't blame the kids, they have talent, rather keep fire the 3 clowns, and hire Bo Pelini like they should have. If this was a business, these 3 "leaders" would be dismissed immediately. For me, I will be sending my message with no further financial donations to any part of the university until the president of the school see fit to hold Pederson accountable for the debacle he created.

Posted by: Henry on Oct 14, 2007 at 05:29 PM
OK, right now the football program stinks. Those players are STUDENTS not PROS. Wasn't this supposed to about TEAMWORK and SPORTSMANSHIP? Seems to me the FANS have lost this concept. They seem to be more worried about BRAGGING rights than the EDUCATION these kids are in college for. These are the same people that complain when these kids get out of school that they don't know their job and were muscle heads in college. WHAT GIVES!!!!???

Posted by: Martin on Oct 14, 2007 at 05:24 PM
The fans left early because it is the only way they can protest the way the team is coached. It's not to disrepect the players. The players probably wanted to leave too.

Posted by: Frank on Oct 14, 2007 at 05:20 PM
Callahan needs to be replaced. The West Coast offense is out of date. Callahan does not seem to know enough about West Coast Offense to teach it to his players. The Spread offense is in today. poor Offense is killing the defense. about West Coast offense to teach it'

In case anyone needed more bad news, this loss, "the worst home loss since 1958", has made the national news around the various websites. Thank you, Mr. Pederson, for not letting Nebraska football "gravitate toward mediocrity". Then again, under your wise leadership, "mediocrity" is starting to look pretty good.

Posted by: Helen Gillespie on Oct 14, 2007 at 04:46 PM
My son, age 45, lives in Georgia, but is still a huge Big Red fan. His suggestion is that Callahan get an Offensive Coach, stop trying to do it himself. Then fire the Defensive Coach and start over there also. In spite of everything, he is still a loyal fan from afar.

Posted by: Jim on Oct 14, 2007 at 04:43 PM
Parker, The Huskers scored a lot of points on bad teams with their 5th team players. I don't see the comparison as some no class coach (Missouri's) running a fake field goal at the end of a already decided game. Nebraska on its worst day has more class than that. Say what you will about the Huskers....they will be back. We just need new coach and AD.

Posted by: Tommy on Oct 14, 2007 at 04:37 PM
So is UNL following the Enron model in regards to giving a failure like Bill Callahan a renewed contract that amounts to 1.7 million dollars a year plus possible bonuses up to $425,000? Now it makes sense why he was fired from the raiders, too bad the koolaide drinking fans of NU didn't realize this mans history. Look up Charles Woodson from the raiders and how he accused Callahan of deliberately trying to sabotage the 2003 season. Bill Callahan everyone he hired, and most of all Steve Pederson should be fired first thing Monday. Most of all though, the fans that supported the firing of Frank Solich should feel the most responsible for the downturn of Nebraska's record.

Posted by: Mark on Oct 14, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Erin, Lin and others who don't understand the frustration by fans: If you live in Nebraska soon you will be frustrated too. Let me explain... Nebraska's athletic department is one of the few in the country whose budget ($60 million) is totally self-supporting. Only a handful of universities nationwide have self-supporting athletic departments. In a year or two when donor support and ticket sales slide, UNL's general operating budget will have to start supporting the athletic department. That is when YOU will start to be upset as well...because your taxes will go up!

All three look to go deep into the post-season. As for the Huskers, I am sure the big money donors are making their thoughts known to Harvey P. and changes will occur at the end of the season.

Turn out the lights...shows over!

These boys are college students and yes, it is just a game. Yet look at these other college programs that are extremely good; players are excellent! So to make the excuse that they are just students and give them a break-c'mon! They need to play with heart and that is something they dont have. Maybe they shouldn't play if they don't play with effort.

I don't know which is more depressing, seeing the blowout score on the sports page or Tom Osbourne in that clown suit on the front page of the OWH this morning.

Four years, that's enough. If we preformed the way Pederson and the coaching staff has for the last four years, we would be relieved of our duties. Also, what is going on in the weight and training table? Have we not lost some key personel there this last Feb? Where are the hhighly rated recruits that were supposed to "make a difference". Sure glad Pederson is seeing that we are "returning to greatness"!!!!!!!!!!!

Erin, For some people it is more than a game. It is OK to have passion about something like your football team. College football is about passion. It is important to this state and right now it stinks.

Next record to fall: "CONSECUTIVE SELL OUTS"

The Blackshirts are extinct! Husker Nation has imploded. Nebraska,s tower of babel has come down! The final chapter in their dynasty has been written. Nebraska football is dead. My highschool could beat them. The way they played. They deserve to lose the rest of the season! They no longer have the desire or the edge. They,re an embarassment to the NCAA!

Posted by: Jeremy on Oct 14, 2007 at 12:25 PM
ErinL, I am disappointed in your approach to this whole problem. There is truely something wrong with the Nebrask football team. Anyone that sees this as just loosing one game needs to wake up. Look at what is ahead, we should be improving on every game, instead we are falling further behind! The teams we have yet to face are going to be harder, and more determined to make a point than OK was. Folks, I remember a scene from the movie "Miracle" its a story about a Hockey teams struggle to take on the best of the best. After one particularly bad performance, the coach made the whole team skate lines after the game. Why doesn't the coach have the team out after the game working till they drop, if they don't want to pay during the game, they'll play after..

What goes around comes around! The Huskers used to run the scrore up on their opponents. Now it's payback time!

Oh my gosh, I agree with Erin its just a football game. I am not a husker fan, but I kinda feel sorry for them, back in the day when they were good, the score would of been reversed. There is a thing called carma, you have a good season for x amount of years, you are going to have a crappy season. I agree with husker nation they need to get rid of Callahan, and the staff, and bring in someone who has a chance to get the team in the top 10 again.

Talked about sore losers, the fans take the prize on being sore losers. Walking out before halftime, that is so low and sure does not encourage the team or show team spirit. So,the boys lost again but hey they are just boys and stop and think how they are feeling right now. Maybe it is the coaching or maybe it is just a bad year. If you can not support your team even in a losing season why even say you are a fan.

It is a sad day for all Husker fans. Four years ago Peterson says before we fall to mediecracy we need a new coach.Solich,gone. Now we have Calahan,Cosgrove and a team that is well below Petersons expectations. The fans are leaving early, the players are disapointed. I fell bad for the players, they have the ability to play well,,,,,so it must be the coaching.Peterson,Calahan and Cosgrove need to go. I would like to think the Boosters would have had enough by now. The Big Red Is Dead,,,,,,,,,,

Reason # 6,583 why Husker fans make me giggle. If you are a "fan" you don't escape the game before halftime because the score is low. Instead, you stay there with your corn hat sucking down beer and inhaling Runzas while cheering on your team. Most Husker "fans" are only fans during a good season, and hibernate during the bad ones, like most will after this game. Food for thought...

ErinL and Lin..... these 250 pound "boys" can rip off your head and do things down your neck I dont want to even talk about. They are intelligent. They are college people now, not pee wees any more. They need to take direction better and be serious about what they are involved in. What they chose to be involved in, a tradition of excellence that they chose to be involved in. Quit calling them kids I'm sure they wouldnt appreciate it either....PS you two could never understand what your tring to contribute to here in this forum, with your comments.

I honestly dont see why people are throwing a fit over nebraska losing if you really look at it nebraska football has not been any good since osborne left The husker nation got spoiled when osborne was coach because he knew how to couch and proved it with national titles So fans assumed the next coach would just be able to do the same thing and thats wrong they wil get back to there glory days and even if they dont its not like its the first time nebraska had a horriable team

The situation is: The players have their school paid for for doing a good job on the field, right? The fix: Remove those who are not living up to their agreements, and give it to those deserving! If nothing else theres a tax savings to those really deserving-THE FANS

Posted by: buba on Oct 14, 2007 at 09:47 AM
Yeah they're just college kids but they've agreed and been groomed to play football at one of the highest levels and for a prestigious program. Lets look at the bigger picture, NE doesn't have mountains, casinos, or anything resembling a tourist attraction but we had a great football program that was extremely well respected nationwide. Think about how the humiliating defeats will affect the number of tickets sold, merchandise purchased, network televised games, booster money donated to the university, and the economy of our state and local area as a whole. But its just a game. Wake up moonbeam.

This group probably has more talent per person, barring specific positions, than past teams. They just don't have anyone to teach them how to play as a team. That I have to lay at the coaches feet. I'll ALWAYS be a Husker fan!! And I'll ALWAYS support the players, they ARE there to get an education FIRST, but I DO hope we can get someone who's passionate about Nebraska and Husker Tradition to bring this group together as a team. Losses are fine as long as you did your best! I don't think we've seen that yet.

How's Steve Peterson doing these days?

Callahan sounds like the riddler when he talks .Can anyone understand what he is talking about? The offense doesnt

Respect the Players If not the coaches

Posted by: Jim on Oct 14, 2007 at 08:42 AM
WOW. First the fans leave by the end of the 3rd quarter. Now they walk out before halftime. What's next? Walking out before, during, or immediately after the National Anthem? I propose changing the entrance/exit areas to read "Here exits the greatest FAIR WEATHER FANS in all of college sports". I'm not a Husker fan (never have been, never will be). But I must admit, the way you so-called fans show support for your team is PATHETIC & DISGUSTING!!!!! Support your team through the good & the bad or give up your ticket to a fan who wants to support them. Ohio State #1.

Yes, we are irate. Many people dump a ton of money into the university and the Athletic Department and their "donation" is to help promote a winning team. This is NEBRASKA, we have pride! Remember the head coach is making well over $1 million this year for these results? The fans are the ones paying that salary through tickets, concessions, and merchandise. For all of us who have invested in this, we have a right to be irate.

Posted by: Stacie on Oct 14, 2007 at 01:02 AM
God Bless the Huskers!! Any true fan wouldn't get up and leave no matter what the score is!! It isn't the NFL; it's college; just relax. Just be proud of them anyways and make them feel good about themselves.

Posted by: ErinL on Oct 13, 2007 at 11:43 PM
It's JUST a football game, it's not like the world is going to end just because the Huskers lost a game.

Posted by: dude on Oct 13, 2007 at 11:33 PM
I agree with the radio announcers...no one on the defense deserves a blackshirt...then again, since nobody on the coaching staff understands what a blackshirt means.....

Posted by: Lin on Oct 13, 2007 at 10:48 PM
So the BIG RED "FANS:" are irate????...Let's remember these are boys....college students....No doubt they feel horrible about their current results...Give them a break... Maybe the answer is for NE to attempt to attract a professional football team to play here....Then the fans could work themselves into a frenzy and take some of the pressure off the college team..Let's remember to keep things in perspective folks...
