A measure before the Chadron City Council would eliminate an ordinance that bars loaded guns from vehicles in the Panhandle town.
The council is scheduled to hold a second reading of the proposal and a public hearing at Monday night's meeting.
Police Chief Tim Lordino wants to keep the ban.
Lordino says the ban is good public policy because it helps keep the peril of loaded weapons away from public areas.
Councilman John Gamby wants to repeal the ordinance, saying a loaded rifle is as much a piece of ranch equipment as any other.
Chadron radio station KQSK says the proposal to lift the ban wouldn't affect loaded shotguns in town, because they are banned under state law.
