A new nationwide report estimates Nebraska is home to 45,000 illegal immigrants.

The data released this week by the Pew Hispanic Center says illegal immigrants accounted for 2.6 percent of the state's population and 3.2 percent of its work force.

The center also estimated last year and in 2005 that Nebraska had 45,000 illegal immigrants. In 2000, that number was 30,000.

Earlier this year, Fremont voters approved a ban on hiring and renting to illegal immigrants. And Nebraska lawmakers have discussed introducing bills similar to Arizona's divisive immigration law.

The latest Pew report estimates 11.1 million illegal immigrants lived in the U.S. in 2009. That represents a decrease of roughly 1 million, or 8 percent, from a peak of 12 million in 2007.
