Delicious Day For Dragonflies
Dragonflies are swarming in various neighborhoods around the Metro and they're targeting mosquitoes.
Channel 6 news received a number of calls Wednesday evening from viewers reporting huge swarms of dragonflies and questioning why there are so many.
We checked with UNL herpetologist Dennis Ferraro and he said, "with all the moisture we received earlier this summer, conditions were conducive for the reproductive cycle of dragonflies." Ferraro added, "the initial larvae stage is in water."
That moisture has also helped mosquitoes multiply, providing an abundant source of food for dragonflies.
Conditions will change with the first frost and Ferraro says that will be the determining factor on whether another three week reproductive cycle for dragonflies will play out.
