A Douglas County jury Wednesday afternoon returned it's verdict in the sexual assault trial of a man who has been considered a possible suspect in the so-called "Midtown Rapist" investigation.

The jury in the trial of Anthony Layton received the case at 11:15 a.m., and by mid-afternoon had found him guilty in one case involving a 68-year-old victim. Layton is guilty of 1st degree sexual assault, robbery and burglary.

He faces a sentence of up to 120 years in prison.

Prosecutors linked Layton to the crime with dna collected at the crime scene.

While only charged and tried in a single case, authorities have investigated Layton's possible connection to other sexual assaults. Within 100 yards of where the 68-year-old victim was attacked, three other assaults took place over a period of two years.

Layton has not been charged in any of those other cases. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says those cases remain open but Layton is a suspect.

A break in the case came when officers one night spotted a man walking in the Midtown area. He matched the description of the rapist so police made contact with him. The officers knew of no crime the man had committed but they took his name. It was Anthony Layton.

They later went to Layton's home and asked if would voluntarily provide a dna sample. Layton did.

That sample was linked to blood evidence on a glove left at the scene of a sexual assault in which the woman was viciously beaten.

It was for that sexual assault that Layton was convicted Wednesday.
