New Police Chief Headed To Plattsmouth

New Police Chief in Plattsmouth.

The Cassgram reports the mayor and a special committee are unanimously recommending Grand Island Police Sgt. Steve Rathman for the position. Mayor Paul Lambert confirmed that Rathman accepted the city’s offer Monday morning.

From the original list of 27 applicants, the Plattsmouth Civil Service Commission submitted five names to Lambert and the committee consisting of city council members Ruth Wassinger and Terry Kerns, City Administrator Erv Portis and Plattsmouth Police Officer Jon Hardy.

One of the five withdrew his name from consideration and the mayor and committee met with the remaining four candidates: Paul Cook of Omaha; Christiaan Whitted of Papillion; John Bartlett of Marshall, Missouri; and Rathman. Three were interviewed again Friday and then Rathman again on Saturday, said Lambert.

Rathman’s full bio will go before the city council Tuesday but Lambert said three things stood out in his mind: Rathman’s oversight of the officers assigned to Grand Island schools, his part-time position teaching law enforcement at the Grand Island satellite location of Doane College, and his involvement in the community. “I am impressed,” said Lambert. “He will do a great job.”
