A committee plans to explore the possibility of a petition campaign to recall Mayor Jim Suttle.

A press conference will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Anthony's Restaurant. It's at 72nd & F Streets. We will stream it live on

It's unclear from the initial release exactly who's behind the press release and who called the press conference.

It comes one day after the City Council approved a new budget with less tax increases than Mayor Suttle's proposal.

Sources tell Channel 6 News that Jim Cleary, the man who led the successful recall of Mayor Mike Boyle in 1987, will have a role in defining strategy aimed at unseating Mayor Suttle. Cleary has been a political consultant for the last 30-years.

We're also learning the recall will be run like a campaign with big money. It's expected the organization will file financial paperwork with the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Committee as early as Friday.

Any petition drive would need approximately 1,000 signatures a day for 30-consecutive days to put it to a vote of the people. Those who sign must be registered voters who live in Omaha.

Organizers declined to comment before the news conference, however sources tell Channel 6 News the group is expected to try to reach the number needed through timing by capturing the captive audience who will be voting on Election Day, November 2. Petitioners would likely be near Omaha polling sites.

Former Mayor Hal Daub, who lost the 2009 election to Mayor Suttle, says he will not be involved in the recall. He added that he has grave concern for the state of affairs in the city.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Suttle issued this statement on Wednesday: “Mayor Suttle remains focused on doing his job as mayor and will not be distracted by political theater.”
