"A customer came and parked at the pump. He got a couple of gallons of gasoline. He somehow managed to rig the pump to continue to give gas to others and just continuously had car after car come in and basically got free gasoline from us.”
Lisa Neighbors is a spokesperson for a gas company that had an unusual theft this week.
"I don't think we've ever even heard of something like this happening before. It's very unusual this person went to an extreme,” said Neighbors.
The gas station doesn’t want to be identified because they don’t want to be seen as a target . The crime has exposed an unusual vulnerability in gas pumps. The vulnerability is that it took the culprit under a minute to rig the pump. The company has since had to hire technicians to provide new defenses against the crime.
"Now, in turn, our company is short the money that we needed to pay for that gasoline we had already purchased and so the price for that will eventually be passed on to our customers."
Other gas stations have been victimized too, by different crimes. A gas station near 54th and Center recently was robbed of over $7,000 in cigarettes.
Both gas stations are asking for the public’s help in identifying the two men responsible. The video link to this story has images of both men. If you can help identify the men, contact Omaha Police at 444-7867.
