Jesus Rodriguez is proof that a life of violence can be turned around. He's a former gang member and we caught up with him at a fund-raising event for Goodwill of Omaha.
Jesus is on the right track now. His work in a local body shop is far removed from his past. Rodriguez was in jail when a counselor encouraged him to get involved at the South Omaha Boys and Girls Club. He did so and he gained new perspective on life as a gang member
Rodriguez says, "It was not for me."
Instead he is working at Jobash Auto Body, learning a business from the ground up. The opportunity came through another connection at the Boys Club.
He met a counselor with Goodwill's youth program, "and he told me that he could get me like a career and at the same time help me get my education," he said.
Richard Jones owns the auto business and he says Jesus is the kind of worker he likes to have.
"He does a great job," Jones says. "He's very energetic and he learns and he just keeps learning."
Rodriguez will also earn his GED along the way. He also has a newborn son to support.
Rodriguez shared his story at the Goodwill event. He received a standing ovation.
