    Life is back on track

    A | A | A

Jesus Rodriguez is proof that a life of violence can be turned around. He's a former gang member and we caught up with him at a fund-raising event for Goodwill of Omaha.

Jesus is on the right track now. His work in a local body shop is far removed from his past. Rodriguez was in jail when a counselor encouraged him to get involved at the South Omaha Boys and Girls Club. He did so and he gained new perspective on life as a gang member

Rodriguez says, "It was not for me."

Instead he is working at Jobash Auto Body, learning a business from the ground up. The opportunity came through another connection at the Boys Club.

He met a counselor with Goodwill's youth program, "and he told me that he could get me like a career and at the same time help me get my education," he said.

Richard Jones owns the auto business and he says Jesus is the kind of worker he likes to have.

"He does a great job," Jones says. "He's very energetic and he learns and he just keeps learning."

Rodriguez will also earn his GED along the way. He also has a newborn son to support.

Rodriguez shared his story at the Goodwill event. He received a standing ovation.

Out of this world assume and Great Job! Jesus you should travel the Omaha schools and continue to tell your story, don’t close that chapter yet. So many kids need inspiration today; you should teach what you know. Some people don’t get it, its peer pressure that puts you there and strive to get away from it; just as an addict is with alcohol and drugs. Part of our problem is we DO rejoice to those who don’t get into trouble and slash the throats of those who do. Reach YOUR hand out and touch the life of a troubled teen instead of turning a blind eye. Some of these kids either have parents that don’t care or don’t have parents at all.

We give this man praise, because he has turned his life around and is becoming a productive and posative part of society now. Do you know how many gang members live in this community(and surrounding communities)? Probably more than you think! Hopefully Jesus will be an inspiration to some of them! :)

Why don't we praise all the millions of people who never were in a gang in the first place, sorry if this isn't a tear jerker for me.

Jesus is a great example of what it takes to be a man. He's getting his act together, taking responsibility for his family, putting food on the table, and getting educated. Put down the guns and pick up the books, that's the way to be a man. Not banging in the streets, ending your life before you hit 20.

Way to go Jesus! Clearly Jesus Christo is moving in your life in a huge way! Good job and for your willingness to change I say praise God! You can be a great example to many Hispanic kids and others...making a difference in your life and the lives of your family will make a difference in the world in which we live. One heart at a time. Via con Dios Jesus...from one grateful white American woman!
