Fontenelle Forest will once again participate in the 40th annual North American Butterfly Association's Butterfly Count. Butterfly species will be identified and counted on July 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the following locations: Neale Woods, Hummel Park, NP Dodge Park, Cunningham Lake, Hitchcock Nature Center, and other nearby private properties.
In 2013, 24 volunteers helped identify 37 different species of butterflies and almost 1500 individual butterflies.
The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) has been sponsoring these annual counts since 1975 and publishes the results to provide important information about the geographical distributions and population sizes of the species counted.
Comparisons of the results over the years monitor changes in butterfly populations and reveal effects of weather and habitat change on the different species.
