Boys Town Center For Behavioral Health Keeping Families Together

Any parent will tell you it's a touchy job, but some children provide a bigger challenge than others when it comes to behavior. A new facility at Boys Town is helping to fill a need.

Donors and staff members cut the ribbon Wednesday morning on the new home of the Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health. The new facility will double the clinic's capacity to help parents and kids with behavioral problems.

The new building opens doors for more kids to be able to stay with their families instead of having to go into foster care. The outpatient care provided at the center has helped parents like Michelle Saub.

"Our family went through a divorce about five years ago and my daughters were having a hard time processing that. So our pediatrician recommended that we come and talk to someone who could help us work through the feelings that they were having.”

Some features of the new facility include observation rooms for helping parents work through problems with young children. “We are able to observe from here and then be able to provide instructions through the microphone and a bug in the ear to parents and giving them step by step instructions,” said clinic director Dr. Tom Reimers. “The children don't know we're in here so they are able to interact a little more naturally with their parents.”

Many times therapy can avoid the need for kids taking prescription drugs. “A lot of times we'll deal with interactions between a mom and a dad and a child or a mom and her child and by dealing with those interactions that child will suddenly start behaving better and they don't need the medication,” said Boys Town’s Dr. Dan Daly.

Saub says her daughters look forward to coming there. “It's a welcoming environment and they're just always grateful to be here and to get the help that they need.”

Some pediatricians will refer patients to the center, but parents can call the clinic directly without a doctor's referral.
