Last Updated: 12:35 PM 03/10/09 - The symptoms don't sound that serious, a racing heart, trouble breathing while exercising, or in Violet Gaither's case, a lot of sweating. The Bellevue woman endured it all for more than 20 years, before a heart attack actually ended up being a godsend. Doctors determined Violet had Atrial Fibrillation, a problem with the heart's rhythm. Alegent Health cardiovascular surgeon Doctor Mohammed Quader says research turns up some troubling news for women. There appears to be a gender bias. Doctor Quader says women are under diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation, and even when the diagnosis comes, women are not being referred for treatment as often as men. Atrial Fibrillation is nothing to mess around with. It increases death risk by 200 percent, and increases stroke risk by 500 percent. In February's Health Check report we'll look at treatment options including medication, ablation, and surgery. Violet Gaither had what's called a "mini maze" procedure weeks ago. Her advice for other women? If you have symptoms, be proactive and get to a doctor. She knows the difference it can make. Tracy (Full Story) |
