The American Cancer Society (ACS) is working to create a world with more birthdays -- a world where cancer never steals another year from someone's life. WOWT is proud to join the fight as a sponsor of the 2013 Relay for Life.
Each year, the American Cancer Society reports roughly 2,210 Douglas County residents are diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Relay for Life, ACS is able to help about 30 percent of those newly diagnosed patients.
Three walks will be held in June. The first is set for June 1st at Westside High School. Two other walks will be held on June 8th at Papillion-La Vista South High School and Elkhorn South High School. Each race will start with an Opening Ceremony and Survivor's Lap.
For many, the highlight of the event is the Luminary Ceremony that takes place after sundown. White bags line the track and are decorated in honor of a cancer survivor or victim. Bags can be purchased for a $10 donation.
