A doctor at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha is offering some suggestions to help Nebraskans avoid heartburn over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dr. Dmitry Oleynikov is the medical director of the minimally invasive surgery program at the medical center and spends many of his days fixing the internal damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease.

He offers these tips to avoid acid reflux during the holiday:

Avoid large meals in the evening, especially six hours before
bed. He says an empty stomach will have less acid and be less
likely to cause heartburn.

Limit high-acid foods like citrus, tomatoes and spicy
peppers.

Avoid gaining weight, which can create abdominal pressure and
force stomach contents back up into the esophagus.
