Last month's retail sales were much better than expected as the warm weather enticed shoppers to buy seasonal items much earlier than normal.

Target reports retail sales rose 7.3% for stores open at least a year.

That's much better than the 5.4% analysts predicted, prompting the discount retailer to revise its forecast for the first quarter.

Economists say retailer also benefited from improved employment and consumer confidence.
