Threatening Phone Call Rattles Woman

"Pay up...or you're going to jail." An Omaha woman got the call and asked Channel 6 News to check it out. We did some digging and found something we should all look out for.

"It did scare me. It really did." Vanessa Drews got a call that would make any of us nervous. "This is investigator Julia Miller."

An investigator? Vanessa immediately called this so-called investigator back. "She said I owed money from a 2008 charge on a bank account, an old charge. This lady said that I owed them money for it and if I didn't pay it I would be having four Class A felony charges."

The "investigator" then told Vanessa she was with the Cass County Checks & Fraud Division. Vanessa needed to pay almost $600 by the end of the day or she would go to jail.

"I was crying and my emotions were all over the place and this lady was just like, I'm not going to feel sorry for you. You did this to yourself."

Although she was upset, Vanessa made a smart move. She called the Cass County Sheriff's Department first. "Cass County doesn't even have a Checks & Fraud Division." Then she looked up the phone number online. "I found out there were several people who claimed the same thing."

Vanessa admits the message and call sounded legit, but a phone call to the Sheriff's Department backed up what she already knew. She has never been charged with anything.

"I'm still shaking from the whole episode. I've never had this happen to me and it's pretty scary."

Vanessa did file a report through the Cass County Sheriff's Department. The phone number the calls came from is (585) 633-0269.
