A retired teacher returned to school and learned an expensive lesson. Purse thieves will strike anywhere at any time, but this time the crime was captured on video.
“This is still the glass from her window.” Gene Starmer returned to the scene of a crime where you wouldn't expect a burglar to strike. “It's amazing they would do it in a school parking lot especially, it happened within 15 minutes after the kids were released from school."
His wife had brought goodies to the teachers at Millard's Hitchcock Elementary School at 104th and Q streets. “So her hands were full with that and that's why she left her purse in the car.”
A red van was caught on camera pulling next to Mrs. Starmer's red car, even as kids were still leaving school. You can see the driver check the hatch or maybe scope the area. Then he's between the car and van, which soon pulls out just before a student walks by.
The car window has been repaired, but there's still damage to the door. It appears the thief used a screwdriver and popped the window. The school has security cameras and Starmer hopes the video will help catch the thief. “Don't want them to think they can come back to this school and break in to other cars.”
They lost cash, checks and something even more valuable, a digital camera with photos of their grandchildren.
