Omaha police arrested a man Thursday afternoon for allegedly stealing copper from the roof of a closed business.
Neighbors had complained about the eyesore being a target for thieves. Fact Finders reported earlier this week that the former Club Nico near 114th and Davenport was stripped inside and out by thieves.
Officers were called there around 12:15 p.m. after an employee at a nearby business saw a man on the roof taking parts of the air conditioning unit out and throwing them to the ground. He also threw down a bag of tools.
When police arrived they found 36-year-old Scott Klemmensen in his van, trying to leave. Police contacted the management of the property who said they would prosecute.
Those in neighboring businesses have been concerned about suspicious characters hanging around the vacant building. “People are out there at night and now with it getting darker you never know who is going to be in there, who is going to be huddled, who might be waiting for somebody to walk out in the parking lot here,” said Bennett Ginsberg.
Klemmensen was booked for one count of felony theft, one count felony criminal mischief and one count of trespassing. He's also a suspect in the attempted theft of an air conditioning unit from Heritage Heights Apartments.
