A lawmaker is calling for a crackdown on gift cards sold on shelves and bins.
Senator Chuck Schumer of New York wants people to know about this new consumer scam.
He says the information is too easy for thieves to capture.
The Senator says it would be simple for retailers to provide better protection.
Senator Schumer says, "And we're asking retailers not to leave the gift cards out in a big basket, or on a rack. But rather you go to the counter and buy one, so you can be sure that it's not ripped off."
To avoid being scammed, make sure the cover protecting the number is still in place, and the PIN hasn't been scratched and revealed.
