Credit Cards Lifted From Purse In Restaurant

It only took seconds for a well-organized crew of thieves to turn a pregnant woman's life upside down, but Papillion police have good clues. The victim shows Fact Finders how these slick operators took her identity.

“I hung my purse over the chair." Joining friends at a Sarpy County restaurant, Alisa's purse became the main course for a five finger feast. “My purse was not zipped shut and they saw the prime opportunity.”

Alisa has a good idea how the purse pickpocket worked. She believes the thief was sitting right behind her, reached back, grabbed her wallet, took out the credit cards and put it back without her noticing.

A police detective suspects one suspect went on a three-hour spending spree with the victim’s four credit cards. “For almost $13,000 worth of merchandise and gift cards,” said Papillion Police Det. Kathy Mattern.

Six iPads, a $2,300 laptop and 15, $100 gift cards bought at five stores before a credit card company flagged them as suspicious buys. “They have to work fast, that's the name of the game is getting the cards and using them immediately," said Mattern.

Alisa doesn't believe the woman using her credit cards snatched them, but acted as a lookout for a table of three women sitting behind her. “I can't believe they had the nerve, obviously this was not their first time because there were other people sitting around the restaurant, too.”

Any time she sits down in a public place, Alisa will make sure her purse is zipped closed and close to her. “I would definitely not let it out of my sight anymore."

Though Alisa and Mattern believe three suspects were involved, only one was caught on camera using the stolen credit cards. Her identity may lead to all of them, so anyone with information is asked to call Sarpy County Crime Stoppers at 402-592-STOP.
