CCW To Be Allowed Inside Nebraska Furniture Mart

Guns will be coming to one of the metros busiest stores, not to sell but to carry. Armed customers with a concealed weapon permit will soon be allowed inside the Nebraska Furniture Mart. Some security staff will also be armed.

One shoplifter pulled a knife and another had a pocket full of weapons. “This is an example of deadly force we face,” says NFM loss prevention manager Jim Cahill.

Loss prevention staff do carry mace, but by June six of them will be armed with Glocks after being trained. “We'll train them on shoot, no shoot principles and scenarios as well as accuracy, shot placement and gun handling,” says TAC Force Training’s Mark Sundemeier.

The half-dozen mart security officers won't be the only ones allowed to carry guns in the store. Plans call for the "no weapons allowed" signs to be scraped off by April 15th. That means anyone with a CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) permit will be allowed in to shop in the Furniture Mart. If security guards or cameras spot someone in the store carrying a concealed gun, then staff will ask for a permit and if the customer has one, they'll be allowed to stay and shop.

“Most concealed carry permit holders are trained very well, they know what they're supposed to do and not do, they're going to act appropriately,” says Cahill.

Fact Finders shopped around for customer opinions on lifting the Mart’s concealed weapons ban in the store.

“Definitely not, I don't care what kind of paper you have,” said one.

“They've gone through the proper channels to get that concealed permit, so I'd feel safe knowing they're walking in there,” said another.

“The more guns, the more accidents, the more trigger-happy people get,” said a shopper.

“It comes down to personal protection,” said another.

They’ve watched customers carry out and now mart security officers will be prepared for those licensed to carry in a gun. Customers carrying concealed weapons with a permit will also be allowed into the Mart's Kansas City store and the one being built in Texas. About a half-dozen trained staff at those stores will also be armed.
