Boil Water Warning

Fifteen-hundred water customers in Springfield, Nebraska are getting notice that will make them boil. A trace of e-coli has been discovered during random testing.

That triggered a boil water notice in the Sarpy County community issued Friday morning. Water system operator Rick Lee said the e-coli or fecal trace was not found in the well but from an outside faucet at a home. It’s near a recent water main repair so Lee suspects that may have caused the positive test.

However residents must boil water for seven days. During that time Lee will be taking a series of 10 samples from around town. If those show no trace of e-coli then the boil notice will be lifted.

In the meantime a state food inspector is going to all restaurants and public businesses in town. He’s telling owners not to use ice machines our fountain pop until they get the all clear sign and a plumber flushes the line.

The owner of Yotes barbeque said customers are being served bottled pop or water. He’s tossed out any food made with a water ingredient this morning.

Grandmother Bonnie Baughman told her four year old grandson Ace to not get a drink from the kitchen faucet. She’s boiling water and pouring it in a pitcher. She’ll also be getting bottled water for tooth brushing and cooking.

The city water operator said hot showers and hand washing with tap water is not a risk.
