A giant vine in an Omaha alley near 41st and California had been threatening electrical, cable and phone service until neighbors called Six On Your Side Wednesday.
The vine was growing in an alley between 41st Avenue and 42nd Street, choking a power pole and spreading along power, cable and phone lines.
It started growing from a vacant house on California Street, and had neighbors complaining to the power company and cable company for years.
"I'm just concerned that the power lines are going to be coming down this winter because the snow is going to weigh these down," neighbor Terri Nesselrotte said. "We're going to have no power, and it's affecting a lot of homes in the area."
Nesselrotte has lived in the St. Cecilia Cathedral area for 50 years, and she says she has made attempts to kill the vine.
"I've contacted Omaha Public Power District, I've contacted Weed Control, done about everything I can do," she said.
When neighbors contacted Six On Your Side, we called the local management company that owns the house. Workers for the Hammon Company went right to work killing the vine, even contacting OPPD so someone could come clear what had grown onto power lines.
Hammon Company officials did not want to go on camera, but said the project should be complete in a few days.
