Save on Car Maintenance

With money so tight these days, everyone is looking to cut corners. But Consumer Reports says a bad place to skimp is on your car's maintenance.

A just-released Consumer Reports study shows where you go for service can end up costing you hundreds more.

"According to the law, you can take your car anywhere you want to have regular maintenance performed," said Consumer Reports Eric Evarts.

And Consumer Reports found independent repair shops often charged less than the dealerships-sometimes more than 300 dollars less.

So when it's time to take your car in for maintenance, it pays to get quotes from both dealerships and independent shops.

And no matter where you get your car serviced, Consumer Reports says be sure to check the work being done against your manual.

When it comes to finding a good mechanic, Consumer Reports says the best place to start is word-of-mouth.
