Countering Check Counterfeiting

A suspected check counterfeiter purchased an estimated four thousand dollars in merchandise during several shopping trips to the Nebraska furniture mart.

Sunday she got something she wasn’t bargaining on. An arrest for theft by deception.

Mart Security Manager Jim Cahill says, “Greed compounded by a little stupidity will always bring them back for more.”

Cashiers are the first line of theft defense. Each day they check photo reports on suspected scam artists and counterfeiters.
Mart cashier Kirsty Frizzell says, “If I see something wrong I go away from my register and call a lead to say something doesn’t look right. So the customer doesn’t know something is going on.”

In the latest case another alert cashier spotted the suspicious check for $1,100. Security came in to apprehend 29 year old Autumn White. Police then arrive to make the arrest.

Mart security suspect White made nearly $4,000 in electronic and furniture purchases over a two month period. All with counterfeit checks using two aliases and phony addresses.
