Students became "walk stars" Wednesday by participating in International Walk To School Day.

Taking part with school children emphasizes the importance of increasing physical activity, teaching pedestrian safety and showing concern for the environment.

Staff at Anderson Grove Elementary School in Sarpy County said you'd be surprised at how many students already walk to school. “We do have a number of children who walk to school each and every day, so today's just a special day to get even more children out around the neighborhood and walking,” said Anderson Grove principal Becky Meyers.

Organizers said the international event was expected to include walkers from all 50 states and 40 countries.
