Eighteen-year-old Alexandra Baxter of Omaha has received a $1,000 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship for her work and dedication to help the less fortunate.

Baxter was among nearly 200 volunteers awarded the scholarship money by Kohl’s Department Stores to go toward higher education.

After learning the shelves of a local food pantry were empty, Alexandra organized the Red Kettle Run, a 5K race that raises food for the Salvation Army Food Pantries in Omaha.

Alexandra has donated more than 81,000 food items and trained others to help start similar Red Kettle Runs in Lincoln, Green Bay, Des Moines, Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago.
