Smiles and hugs awaited Benson High School students at Omaha's Eppley Airfield Tuesday night upon the return of the junior ROTC cadets from their trip to Normandy, France.
They took part in ceremonies last Friday honoring the 70th anniversary of D-Day when American soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. "You felt pride, you felt reverence, so for each of the students I think it takes a while for it all to sink in," said senior Army instructor Lt. Col. Michael Debolt.
The cadets took part in a wreath-laying ceremony and parade at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, the first French village liberated.
