The guys in REO Speedwagon got their first gig in 1967 when they played a show for a fraternity at the University of Illinois in Champaign. It reportedly ended with a food fight. Anyone else picturing “Animal House” here?
I bring this up because if you've seen these power ballad pioneers perform in recent years, you've witnessed an energy suggesting that, in spirit, they are still at that frat party. Now, I'm not saying we should all go to Stir Cove on Sunday, July 20 and start a food fight, but I can guarantee one thing: It's going to be party.
How do I know? Have you ever seen soccer moms turn into cougars and cut loose for the night? Of course, the husbands and boyfriends who attend are the real winners at the end of the night when those ladies are all jacked up on barley, hops and power ballads.
"Can't Fight This Feeling"? No, no they can't.
So thank you, REO. Thank you for "Ridin' the Storm Out," "Keep On Loving You," "Take It On the Run," "Keep the Fire Burnin'" and other ditties that have become preambles to nights not soon forgotten.
Get in an amorous mood by watching the perfectly 1980 video to "Keep On Loving You." Just click on the link at right to see it.
Oh, and one more thing: Hipsters ... there's no reason to feel uninvited to this dance. Your dark-rimmed glasses and scarves are welcome here. Don't fight the power ballads. You know you can't resist. Come ... join us. We promise we won't tell your friends at the coffee shop that you were here.
