In 2008, ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) threw a wrench in the vinyl listening parties that were being held at the Barley Street Tavern. It threatened a lawsuit against the music-friendly bar if it didn't shut down its weekly vinyl night. The Barley Street shut it down, but has since begun to pay dues to ASCAP and is once again holding vinyl listening parties at the Benson hangout on the first and third Tuesdays each month.
The deal: Bring a record (of the vinyl variety) from your collection and put your name on the list. When it's your turn, you pick a side of that record and drop the needle. It's a righteous concept that brings together vinyl loyalists to wax philosophic about their favorite records over free peanuts and $2 tall boys.
The next "Viva La Vinyl!" listening party is Tuesday, August 19th at 7:30 p.m. Until then, enjoy a video to Pearl Jam's "Spin the Black Circle" by clicking here. Pearl Jam will be in Lincoln to play the Pinnacle Bank Arena on October 9th.
