Finally! Keen will be heard by the masses.
That's what I thought when I heard local gonzo music artist Darren Keen was putting his spin on the beats of epically popular, helmet-wearing kings of electronic house music Daft Punk (shown above).
That's the key word here – LIVE. Because when Darren Keen performs live, anything can – and typically does – happen. And because he's presenting his interpretations of one of the most popular music groups, especially this year with "Get Lucky," this is a chance for people who certainly know Daft Punk to discover one of Nebraska's most creative and infectious musicians.
I first witnessed Keen (that's him wearing a funny little hat at right) when he joined Omaha band Musico back in the late-90's. He and his guitar turned a show at the now-defunct 49'r Lounge into a one-man rock 'n' roll extravaganza. Everyone there that night knew this crazy red-haired dude was special.
Keen went on to perform under the moniker The Show Is The Rainbow and currently under Touch People. Here's what he had to say about his Daft Punk-themed show on FRIDAY (Dec. 20) at the House of Loom, 1012 S. 10th St.:
"I have rebuilt and restructured some of my favorite songs of all time for this show. I love Daft Punk, and rather then simply DJ-ing their music, I wanted to dig deep and sample the same source material as them, and try to build my own wall of electronics and really nail the things that I think are special and amazing about the music of Daft Punk."
This one is going to be a dandy, folks. It's definitely the show of the week. Neal Duffy – aka DJ W.E.R.D. – also performs. Cover is just $5 to experience the Keen.
