She's in her third year of medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Her name is Heather Berney.

Local music fans, however, will know her better as Betty Jean, the lead singer and songwriter for the Betties.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, Betty Jean will celebrate the release of her first solo album, an 18-song collection titled Over the Moon, with a show at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Joining Betty Jean – whose brand of indie folk (is there any other kind?) lingers warmly in your ears hours after hearing it – will be Omaha heavy hitters Matt Cox and the Traveling Mercies.

Tickets are $5 and the show starts at 9 p.m.

And get to know Berney/Betty Jean by watching the video linked at right.
