Channel 6 News continues its commitment to bringing you in-depth interviews with candidates as we approach the November election. Sunday, our Decision 2012 coverage centers on Deb Fischer, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.
Current Nebraska State Sen. Deb Fischer recently came to Omaha to speak with future voters, but she is also reaching out to those who will have a say this November. “We have to address the fiscal crisis we're in, that's first and foremost. What I want to do, we have to cut government spending and we need to back government away from businesses so they can create jobs."
As a state senator for the past eight years, Fischer says she has demonstrated the importance of bipartisanship. "I've been effective in the legislature, I've worked across party lines and taken on really big issues and made tough decisions and that's what we need to see happen in Washington as well. When you have a country that is so polarized and you have people so divided, the leaders in this country need to come together."
While her opponent, Bob Kerrey, says he has remained connected to Nebraska while living in New York for the past decade, Fischer says she has been here and involved her entire life. “I've traveled the state of Nebraska and I know Nebraskans all across the state. I understand their concerns, I share concerns and I've listened to their concerns."
She says those concerns are good schools for their children, good jobs to provide for their families, lower taxes and overall, wanting the "good life.”
