State Legislature District 11 Candidates
Channel 6 News continues its coverage of Decision 2012 with a look at the race in Nebraska's District 11 featuring candidates with a combined 42 years of experience in the Unicameral, challenger Ernie Chambers and Sen. Brenda Council.
After blazing a trail in the state capitol for 38 years, Ernie Chambers had to leave because of term limits. “I have had some people ask me, am I only going after Brenda Council because I'm running against her and I tell them no." He says this is a race about integrity and honesty.

Council says her record the last four years as a senator speaks for itself. "Jobs and job creation, quality education, safe neighborhoods and healthy families.” She's most proud of her work with the Youth Conservation Program, putting youngsters to work this past summer in state parks. “It was a resounding success."
Chambers’ legacy has been filled with advocating for the less fortunate and fighting for civil rights. “It helped earn me the label “Godfather of District Elections” because I procured election of the Douglas County Board and City Council, which resulted in black people elected to those boards for the first time in history, but people forget or they never knew."
While this was expected to be a race about two experienced candidates, it's turned into a one-topic affair after Council pleaded guilty to filing false reports after using her campaign cash to fund her gambling addiction.
“Brenda Council is a lying, thieving criminal," says Chambers, who has hammered at Council on his weekly cable TV access show. "They are more interested in keeping me out than keeping her in."
Council recently earned her 30-day pin where she's been clean of gambling. Chambers believes the Legislature will kick her out of office if elected. Council says it's about second chances. “I'm so grateful that many of them are forgiving and they do look at my body of work as opposed to a single incident."
