Baby steps...
Baby steps...

Today was (is) the first day of the rest of my life! Oo-rah! First things first, sign on to the BetterU site and begin the program... did ok on my quiz (even though I was sure one was a trick question). Read up on the information that I knew but didn't really know... ya' know? Then on to setting goals. These are my goals for the week:

1) This week, I will identify my personal benefits of being physically active and eating healthy, as well as barriers that get in my way of being physically active and eating healthy.

2) This week I will drink at least 64 ounces of water at least 5 days.

3) This week I will get in at least 30 minutes of cardio at least 3 days.

I know they don't seem like much, but for me, right now... they're attainable and that's what's important. I really liked the concept of setting SMART goals that they talked about in this weeks lesson...

Specific Measurable Appropriate Realistic Timeframe

If you are anything like me, you are going in about 10 different directions during the day. With all of my kids home during the summer, it is a major logistics chore to be able to schedule any time for me. I enlisted my son, Caelan, to be my "support person". I informed him his job was to be my water-nazi and to make sure that I was headed out to the gym on MWF at 1:00 with Trace in tow. Um, yeah... not happening... at least not today. I did drink my water, but as far as getting to the gym, not so much. Poor Caelan. He was like "maaaahhhhmmmm! You need to leave!" "Ya, I know, but Christian is working and he took the car and Liz needs to get her check deposited before she works and I have to go drop off that prescription this morning and I'm expecting a delivery that requires a signature and..." you get the idea. So, nevertheless, I did not get to the gym today, but I did take the stairs instead of the elevator...like I said, baby steps.

As far as my goal for this week... watch out, the geek in me is showing. I have tickets to see my favorite band play on Friday night. If I have reached my goals by then, I will get a souvenir t-shirt. It's not like I need the shirt, but this band is "retired" and only gets together to do these reunion tours every so often. Last time I saw them, I was 7 months pregnant with Trace and it was a fantastic show! I can't wait to see them again.

So that's it! I'm off and running, unfortunately for today the running is only figuratively and not literally, but hey, it's a step in the right direction. Wish me luck tomorrow morning because I am planning on heading out to the mall and joining up with Heart and Sole Walking Program sponsored by Alegent Health. Margaret Sweigart is the exercise physiologist who is in charge tomorrow and I can't wait to see her. I know she is going to be a major source of information and support to me for these next weeks and months.

If you haven't already signed up, I encourage you to go to goredforwomen.org and register to join the Go Red for Women movement. You can start your own journey to a BetterU as you follow along with me.

Signing off for today...

So did you get your shirt? I think your goals are great...starting with small things is a better way to start then saying I'm going to run a marathon tomorrow. Making changes in your life can be hard, but making changes that will stick are even harder! You can do! You have lots of support!!
