Summer Camps

Sunny, breezy, and warm ... that means one thing ... summer is on the way!

If you have children in school, chances are they're counting down the days until summer vacation. While everyone deserves a break, too much down time can take a toll on some kids.

If you've been meaning to check out summer activities, our education expert Jennifer Di Ruocco, says now is the time. In this month's Teacher's Thoughts she has some good advice on choosing a summer camp. We also have provided links to get more information. The "biggies" like Omaha Children's Museum and Henry Doorly Zoo are represented, but I'm curious about some of the options out there that might not be as well known.

Have a camp your child just loved? Post a comment and let the rest of us know about it. One of the things I like best about this blog is learning from other people's experiences.

Check out Adventure in Art in Benson; they have a week-long (M-F during "work day hours") art-based kids camp in the summer. Not too pricey, either. It's a great experience for those kids who love the fine arts, and the grand presentation on Friday afternoon is a lot of fun!

The Montessori Parents Co-Op for Children has an excellent summer day camp program.

My son LOVES the SAC museum summer camps as well as golf camps. There are tons of different ones at Durham and the Rose as well as extremely educational choices at UNO.

Camp Luther is also a great camping experience. Near Columbus.

Camp Moses Merrill. Its our state church camp. They have weeklong camps from 3rd grade - high school. They also have specialty camps i.e. horse care, music & drama, primary weekend (1 & 2nd grade w/parent). Located southwest of North Bend, NE about 60 miles from Omaha. My husband and I met at camp when were elementary age, my son and his fiance had attended camp together from elementary on and reconnected after high school when both worked at camp.

YMCA has excellent camps. Camp Pokomoke (in CB) is the only one still open (camp Elkhorn closed a year or two ago) but it is a lot of fun and pretty educational...especially for those who love the outdoors. Their daycamps at the YMCA locations are fun too!
