Back in October, I made the trek to Ames to watch Nebraska v. Iowa State.  Since Ames is where I decided to spend thousands of dollars on a college education, I feel it necessary to check back every once in a while to see if my money is being put to good use!!

One thing I really miss about the college life are all the small, hole in the wall joints to grab a quick bite to eat.  You know the places, the ones that survive on the crazy hours and appetites of the college student.  Some may last, some may not, but if you have never been to Ames, there are a few that rank right up there on my list.  The Flying Burrito and Battle's BBQ are #1 and #2.  Equate The Flying Burrito to Chipotle or Qdoba but with their own unique flavor and a few more options to over stuff (Try the chipotle sour cream!) I already have my meals planned on any trip to Ames, no matter how long I stay or how hungry I am.

Now Omaha doesn't depend on the college student as much as Ames does obviously but there have got to be a few, locally owned places here in town with that sort of reputation.  Any Suggestions???

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Here's what I've devoured so far: Lo Sole Mio - GREAT! Dundee Dell - GREAT! Amato's brought us breakfast here at work and I had trouble walking out under my own power after! Big portions of GREAT food!

Rusty, next time you're in CB, stop by and try Christy Creme for good eats! Ask John Chapman about us as he and his family are regulars here, as was your predecessor Jeff Jensen while he was at WOWT.

Love love love Nettie's !! It's a family favorite. Great mexican food! Malara'sis also great. Try the French Fried Cheese Ravioli and the Motzarella Sticks. LoSole Mio's hands down best Italian food in Omaha. Everything is great.

Dundee Dell is great for burgers or fish n chips. The Radial Cafe is a great breakfast joint. Barrett's Barleycorn on Leavenworth (big Creighton hang out) has a great sandwich called The Blarney Stone. Cecil's on Dodge just east of 50th is another tiny hole in the wall good for breakfast. I like O'Connors in the Old Market too. I have to agree with Nikki--Malara's is the BEST for home cooked Italian food! Lo Sole Mio's is good too but huge portions and you sometimes have to wait forever for a table. My true favorite Omaha orignal is Jam's. It isn't a hole in the wall, and it's a little more high-end than a burger joint, but their food is awesome!

I can't say Nettie's enough for Mexican...Rice Bowl is great Chinese on Saddle Creek, the Rusty Nail out on 142nd and Pacific has some pretty sweet burgers, and if you're feeling risky, down on 16th street there's a grill that serves good breakfast called Nighthawks. We'll hit em up some time!

Goldbergs isn't really a whole in the wall, and it's usually pretty busy, but if you want pretty good, sometimes greasy bar food, Goldberg's is your place!

I'm an Iowa State student currently and I love going to Battle's! It's amazing. In Omaha the old market has some amazing smaller cafes and such I'm not sure what's there anymore. It has been a while since I've been home. If you like Italian food there is a great place called Malara's Italian Restaurant. Everything is homemade. I try to go there whenever I come home.
