You've probably heard of "snaking in a long putt."
In this case it's the real thing and the four footer is still out there slithering through the sandhills that surround the Dismal River Golf Club near Mullen, Nebraska.
We all knew when we teed off several weeks ago that snakes are indigenous to the area. I just didn't expect to see one face to face.
It was a bull snake and it really posed no threat. Had I threatened the snake within striking distance, in self-defense it would have inflicted a painful bite that would certainly have thrown off my golf game.
But having encountered bull snakes before in the wild, I knew better.
What did cross my mind though was to catch the snake, zip it up in my golf bag, find a gunny sack, and then transport the prize catch back to Omaha and surprise my grandsons.
Papa would have been a hero.
Fortunately I talked my reluctant playing partner into snapping a picture for me. He refused to even get near the snake.
My grandsons response to the picture: "Papa is pretty brave.".
Imagine what they'll say if the next one I come across is a rattlesnake.
Knicely Done!
