Recently I had the privilege to serve as emcee for the opening ceremonies of the Nebraska Special Olympics Summer Games.  Athletes from throughout the state were honored with the traditional welcome at Morrison Stadium on the Creighton campus.

A shout out here to all the organizers and volunteers who give so much of their time for the athletes.  Included in that group are law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions who carry the torch in a run across the state.  It's a fundraiser for the Special Olympics and the payoff takes place during the opening ceremonies with the presentation of the check.

The efforts of Nebraska law enforcement this year netted more than $219,000 for the Special Olympics.  It's a huge boost for an organization that provides great opportunities for the athletes and their families.

Knicely Done!

I know a special needs young man in North Platte who is originally from Fremont. He really enjoyed Special Olympics when he was here, but doesn't have it in North PLatte. Is law enforcment the vehicle that needs to get things going out there ? ? They seem to do a good job here. Maybe a state wide campaign from law enforcement to get things rolling would be helpful.

This is a very honorable organization. It doesn't seem to get as much attention as a lot of other things. Thanks for bringing it to others attention. I have a good friend whose son has Down's Syndrome and he is in his late 20's and enjoying life like only he can. He has been part of the Special Olympics since he was able to participate. The smile on his face and the faces of others is worth every minute put into the Special Olympics.
