The fake field goal used by Bo Pelini in the Huskers win over Kansas was certainly very creative. The holder Jake Weschk, received the ball and instead of placing it on the ground, flipped it backwards over his head to kicker Alex Henery who caught the ball and ran for the first down. What you may not realize is some 28 years ago Husker Coach Tom Osborne had a similar trick in the play book but it was never used during a game. The quarterback at the time, Jeff Quinn, told me about it. The play was to be used inside the five yard line in a short yardage situation when the defense was sure to stack the line in an effort to stop a smash-mouth play. Instead, Quinn would take the snap and turn his back on the defense as if he was ready to hand off to the I back and then flip the ball over his head to the middle of the defense where the tight end would be in place to grab the ball. I asked Coach Osborne about it several years ago and his response was that the trick play may have been practiced but there were so many plays over all that time as Head Coach he can't remember. What is certain, Bo Pelini has some trick plays in his book. A fake field goal went for a touchdown earlier this season, Marlon Lucky has thrown a touchdown pass, and defensive noseguard Ndamukong Suh has a pass reception for a touchdown. Don't be surprised if you see Nate Swift throw a pass before the season is over. Knicely Done!
